Build Advice. Please help.

Thread Starter
Hey you guys.

I used to be a hard core gamer, but for the last 8 years ive been working too much to really play any games.
But now my PC is dieing on me. I built it in 2004. Sometimes it just blue screens and sometimes it will just reboot itself without warning.

So basicly I want to build a new PC for work and gaming. I work a lot with Autocad and Mastercam (for manufacturing)
I do lots of 2d and 3d work. So this machine needs to be powerfull but also not too expensive.

So this is what im thinking about.
A 3930k on a P9X79 main board.
16 gigs of DD3 @ 2133 mhz.
128G SSD + 2TB spinner.
GTX 670 2gig.

The company is called Cyberpower And they are asking about 2,077$ (without monitor) before tax.
Does this sound like an ok price / system?

Will this be ok for Gaming modern games ie: 2011, 2012 games in 1080 x 1920?
I know it will be fine for doing my work. Just not sure about the gaming part.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would avoid an OEM system like the Black Plaque.

You could easily do this yourself...

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($27.98 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme3 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard ($207.86 @ Newegg)
Memory: Samsung 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Samsung 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($84.99 @ Microcenter)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($109.00 @ B&H)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card ($387.86 @ Newegg)
Case: Antec P280 ATX Mid Tower Case ($94.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (64-bit) ($107.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $1700.63
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Give or take a few bucks, just add your own display and keyboard/mouse, you are off and running.

Hey thanks for the reply.

Well youve given me something to think about. Saving 300$ never hurts.
But im not too sure about your choice of video card. Is the one you chose as good as the GTX 670 for gaming
and 2d/3d drawing/modeling? if so then i may just follow your advice.

PS: the cooler you suggested. is that air or water? and if its air, will it cool the cpu as well as a good water cooler?

thanks again
Happy time PC.

The 7970 is a little better than the 670 for gaming, and far better for modeling.

The cooler is a very good cooler, but it isn't going to cool nearly as well as a good water loop will. In truth not even the best of the best air coolers are going to do as well as a good water loop.

For hardcore gaming all you need is a 3570K. The 3930K is nice but not worth the extra 400 dollars

Also here's a tip: If you live by a microcenter it'd be a good idea to buy all parts there if you plan on building yourself. That way if anything is just dead out of the box you can always just drive back and return it instead of waiting for a 2 week RMA.

Wow. Are you serious? The 7970 is better then the nvidia for 2d 3d modeling?
That's very surprising. But hey, if that's the way it is, then maybe I need to reconsider
My choice of GPU.

Let me ask one more question. How does the 7970 stack up against the gtx 680 2gig?

Thanks again. And sorry for asking so many questions.
Happy time PC.
