What to do? (new hdd)

Thread Starter
Right now I've got a case with 3 spaces for hard drives (which are all full). I've got two 40gb drives in RAID0 for my "main" drive and a 120gb drive for storage. I just picked up a 250Gb drive for cheap ($10, returned item from Microcenter). Assuming the drive actually works, how should I go about installing this drive? Should I simply move all of my data from my full 120Gb drive to the 250 and leave the 120 out? Should I burn all of my data from the 120 drive to discs and put them together in RAID? Since the 250 is literally double the size, I don't think I'll fill it up for a while... Maybe I should just sell the 120... Any ideas?

Pull that raid-0, and replace with 250GB drive.

those being 40GB's, failure is just that far away...

Make shure you test that 250GB hdd throughly with manufactures testing software.

What makes you think my 40Gb drives are about to fail? I was considering adding 2 more... Besides, anything worth keeping stays on my "storage" drive (whether it's the 120 or 250Gb drive).

What testing software do I use to test a WD2500?

Why are there only 3 spaces for hard drives? Got any pics? Can use brackets or something and mount it in a 5.25 bay? Or you could get a case and use the 120GB externally for system/network back ups.

It's a pretty old case. There's actually only two spaces for HDD's in the 3.5" bay. I'm using my spare 5.25" bay for my storage drive. My other two 5.25's are holding my DVD-ROM and DVD-RW drives.

The external drive idea doesn't sound too bad. I saw a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0adapter at Microcenter selling for $20 the other day; that may be what I do.

I just remembered... The 120Gb drive is SATA and the 250Gb drive is IDE. Does that change any of the above recommendations?

The type of HD (SATA or PATA) doesn't change anything. SATA just means that you don't have to worry about messing with jumpers. Are you bothered by aesthetics at all? If not, you can just leave the HD in the case on the bottom of the case not bolted to anything, pretty ghetto, but it will work. Probably not the most secure way of putting the HD in there but it will be connected and operational. If you do end up doing that, you should put the HD on an anti-static bag and then on the case. Like I said, this will allow you to run all of your drives since it sounds like you don't really want to remove any of your other drives, but it is a pretty ghetto and hopefully temporary fix.

As far as a storage drive goes, no difference. I think if you are ok with the 120GB external enclosure go down that road. You can hook it up when you need a backup and it is also disconnected from your system to guard against infection. Just don't forget to virus scan it - some poeple forget to since it isn't hooked up all the time.

I am into asthetics. I just got my case set up where you can see virtually no cables or wires (see Sladesurfer's rig for an idea). That makes the SATA drive "worth" more than the IDE drive... However I do have a PATA to SATA adapter that I would put on my 250gb drive, so cabling isn't really too much of an issue.

I would build something to allow me to mount a few more drives, but I don't like having a drive setting there not being used. I can easily fit all of my music/movies on the 250Gb drive with room to spare. The 120Gb drive would be driving me nuts, just setting there doing nothing. I'll probably get one of those external SATA to USB drive bays and keep my 120Gb drive in it for "mobile" storage. I don't really know what I would need 120Gb for, but it'll give me something to show off lol.

External HD enclosures are pretty cheap nowadays - about $40, so you could get yourself some mobile storage. But, the thing is those, at least the one I have, is that it is fairly loud and the speeds of the usb connection is no where near PATA speeds. It is really really slow compared to native PATA speeds.

Even USB 2.0?? What about Firewire?
