Anodizing a heatsink?

For a while I've been looking at finding a way to change the color of my heatsink. I've never been too keen of the bright and shiny silver color. I've seen some people who painted the top of theirs, which doesn't look bad, but I've also seen several of those who showed that they were getting several degrees Celsius worse performance after they painted. From my understanding, anodizing would theoretically solve the problem and may even improve the ability of the heatsink to transfer heat.

So the question is, has anyone anodized a heatsink or know more about the effect it might have? And would there be any issues with some acid remaining and eating away at the heatsink? I've seen several pretty straight forward guides on how to anodize at home and thought it might be worth a shot.

Yeah, I saw that former link, not the latter one when I was doing research on it. The problem arises when you consider that a heatsink isn't pure aluminum. I was trying to figure out if there would be issues with that or if I would have to try and find some way to mask off the parts that aren't aluminum.

It's possible that the non-aluminum parts may resist the acid etching.

If it's silver and aluminum, then it's likely clear anodized already. Most shops that do anodizing can strip the existing anodizing easily enough. Check in with a local shop about the other parts and whether they're compatible with the process or can be masked.
