[SA] What is the latest on AMD’s Sea Islands?

As far as performance goes, AMD was promising AIBs roughly a 30% speed boost from the new silicon a few months back. That we hear is fairly optimistic, with more measured sources saying +15% is more likely. AMD is power bound and die size equals cost, so what you are looking at is process improvements and algorithm optimizations rather than any new big bangs.S|A

Sounds right to me. Even if the gains over current gen are fairly anemic I will still probably unpgrade to it as I am still rocking a 6950 which can be a problem in some games at my resolution.

I may or may not grab a new card. I've been wanting to replace my 580 but I really couldn't justify the price for a jump to something like a 7950 or 7970. But then again I've slowed down on gaming and I also think waiting until the new consoles come out and wait for the video cards that come out after the consoles.

That 580 should last through the next gen, it's no slouch.

I know I won't be upgrading unless the prices are very reasonable, my 7950 at 1235/1600 runs anything I throw at it at 60 FPS, and that's enough for me. smile.gif

Really no games out to warrant an upgrade. I have my 2nd card off most of the time.. You need eyefinity or 3d to need more power. I'm hopeful we will see more pretty games with new consoles

I thought the 8800-series of GPUs were supposed to match up to the 670 and 680?
Now the 8900-series is +15% of 7970GHz Edition, even granting the 7970 GHz Edition a +5% on the 680 would mean the lineup would be incredibly tight with the 8950 at +10% over the 680 and the 8970 at +20%.

Pretty much what i expected , AMD and Nvidia will both deliver 15 to 20 % upgrades and the "power" balance will stay same as currently with 6xx/7xx series , only thing I'm curious about is will AMD release dual GPU in 8xx lineup.
I will probably be skipping next series of GPU's , than again i say that every year tongue.gif

If you buy the single top end cards you can normally upgrade on every second GPU release.

It's people that buy mid range cards that have to upgrade more often.

I don't have any fears that performance per watt will be markedly improved over Tahiti. Tahiti was a hot mess.

Funny that Charlie's still sticking to his Canary Island guns. It seems he's implied that HD89xx won't be larger than HD79xx?
