MSI GTX660 ti OC - is it worth overclocking?

Hi there!

I was wondering if I would notice a difference in OC'ing the GTX 660ti or not.
I can play BF3 on ultra, and it seems to be fine.

My question really is:
-Why would you need to overclock something that seems pretty OC'ed already - if this was a 7950, then I wouldn't have asked.
-If I OC, what settings should I use in afterburner?

I have looked at quite a few articles on the subject, and see the improvements on benchmarks - but what does this affect on a day to day basis?
Also - the settings on their afterburners seem a little different - thus I would appreciate telling me what I would need to change, and even to what:

Cheers!

Yes, you should overclock it. I mean, you don't have to, but it's free performance, so why not? It's very easy. Change the power limit (in the settings screen) to the max, and then just slide in a positive offset for the core and memory. Try something like +50 core/+100 memory to start, and the do some quick stability testing with Heaven. If that works you can try it out in some games. Then iterate the process until you start seeing artifacts or crashes, dial it back a bit, and there you are. You can probably put in quite a bit more offset for the memory than the core, normally the memory has a lot more headroom on these cards.

If you post screenshots like that again, it helps if you put a load on the card first, so everyone can see what your boost clocks are - they are different for each card.

I think memory overclocking is the most important for 660 Ti because of small 192-bit memory bus. Start overclocking it in +50 at the time, testing each increase with Heaven 3.0 benchmark maximum settings. If you start getting lower performance or artifacts dial back memory oc to previous stable clock.

thanks for the input guys!
I'll do what you guys said - as for max settings on this bench I'll look into that too, and ask here if I have problems smile.gif! +reped

Remember that there is no free lunch. OC means higher temperature, so monitor the temp via afterburner.

Personaly, I'll wait a year or longer to OC a new grahpics card. Why? First, I can make sure the card is working correctly and it should be able to match a reasonable performance or you choose the wrong one. Second, when it seems the card can't handle new games, you can OC it. Supposed OC still doesn't help, then it is time to upgrade. smile.gif

That's a very fair point indeed.

Right I've been gaming for a little more on BF3.
Finished the whole campaign on normal.
Finished the co-ops on normal and hard.

Had no problems throughout - it has been beautiful.

However, when on multiplayer, I realise when I'm flying a jet, with the outside view, and do some sharp turns, I feel like I get "lines" through my screen.
This is without any recordings being in place.
When I start fraps, and record, these lines become more recurring.

My cousin is saying that it might be the fact that my DVI cable isn't shielded (thus I've ordered one)

Could anyone put any input to this?
I'm playing BF3 on ultra.

And thus goes back to my question - would OC'ing the GTX660ti help?

Turning on V-Sync should get rid the 'tearing' on your screen. It is cause by you graphics card supplying frames faster that your monitor can display them. i.e. if you gpu is providing the game at 70fps and your monitor has a 60Hz refresh rate, you might experience tearing.

indeed!
I did this, and it resolved most of my problems smile.gif
Haven't touch OC'ing the GPU yet, simply because I haven't needed to + had CPU/RAM problems
