actually, I always achieve the best spread of ICD with a flat piece of old credit card, the trick is in the angle you hold it at ... and it requires quite a lot of even pressure to spread it across the IHS evenly from edge to edge ... takes a few minutes, but definitely worth it!

spreading ICD with the cooling block will cause scratching of IHS (if anybody cares), but spreading it evenly with a credit card seems to be free of this problem or at least minimizes scratching. ICD is not too bad to remove either, it pretty much peels off, but cleaning the IHS super clean is another story, takes a while again ...
however, I am currently using CoolLaboratory Liquid Ultra and it's by far the best paste I've ever used! easy to spread with a brush (included in package), easy install. very easy to remove when fresh - easily wipes off with paper towels and isopropyl alcohol. I'd assume over time it cakes a bit and probably that's why manufacturer also included a "rubbing pad" in package.
