IC Diamond 7 thoughts. - Page 2

Sorry i've been absent recently. I decided to go for the IC diamond when i was ordering my gtx 670 and waterblock, so i'll redo the TIM on the cpu aswell whilst im at it smile.gif

IC Diamond is the best non-metal TIM I used so far. gives me always at least 5C lower temperatures under load than any "soft" TIM (like MX-2 or PK-3 included). only "soft" alternative I know would be Shin Etsu X23 (7783D) which is silicone based (I think, unless I remember it all wrong) and is only a few degrees worse than ICD.

However, ICD has a major drawback (on top of hard application and sometimes problematic removal), it does scratch the IHS surface on e.g. CPU, most it happens during application or removal, since the diamond particles will scratch anything softer than diamond when friction is applied to them.

The difference between most better pastes is a couple of degrees at most, application methods are likely to make a bigger difference. I found ICD to be a royal pita to work with. Its by far the thickest paste that I've ever used. It doesn't spread well, Its a real pain to clean up. The one time that I did try it my temps were worse than with MX-2, mostly due to it not spreading easily.

That's why I don't recommend it for regular use, even though I personally use it.

Most people are going to have a hard time installing it. They're going to either get worse results, or spend a lot of money on re-seating. They're going to complain later when they need to remove it. It might ultimately give them a 2-3c drop but generally only in cases where that 3c difference is realistically irrelevant for every day use.

That said, it is great (albeit expensive and hard to work with), and unlike it's easier and cheaper cheaper competitors, it has uses outside of normal every day computing with an ambient-air-cooled system (this includes most liquid cooling loops too since typical liquid loops are still ultimately being cooled by ambient air temps). Heck, you can even use it as the finial step in lapping a processor - what other paste can do that? tongue.gif

I would be a bit surprised. There generally isn't that much of a difference between most pastes with good contact and based off of my experience it doesn't work all that well with poor contact.

In my experience with IC7 Diamond, it is impossible to spread manually, its a TIM that requires the pea dot, let heatsink / block spread type application, and it, for me anyways, is known to gradually erase the print on the IHS of CPU's...

actually, I always achieve the best spread of ICD with a flat piece of old credit card, the trick is in the angle you hold it at ... and it requires quite a lot of even pressure to spread it across the IHS evenly from edge to edge ... takes a few minutes, but definitely worth it! thumb.gif

spreading ICD with the cooling block will cause scratching of IHS (if anybody cares), but spreading it evenly with a credit card seems to be free of this problem or at least minimizes scratching. ICD is not too bad to remove either, it pretty much peels off, but cleaning the IHS super clean is another story, takes a while again ...

however, I am currently using CoolLaboratory Liquid Ultra and it's by far the best paste I've ever used! easy to spread with a brush (included in package), easy install. very easy to remove when fresh - easily wipes off with paper towels and isopropyl alcohol. I'd assume over time it cakes a bit and probably that's why manufacturer also included a "rubbing pad" in package.

I understand what you mean by it being quite "gloopy" all thought this wasn't difficult to overcome, i apply every TIM with the "pea" method anyway. The results for my cpu temperatures have improved definitely upon load from 75 max to 70 max.

I've water cooled my gtx 670 for the first time so i have nothing to compare it to but it never goes above 36 degrees with the ICD paste, so i'm quite pleased.

I use IC diamond with the H80. At idle my CPU (Q6600 @3.0ghz) is at room temperature. I've only just installed the H80, so the next step is to OC to 3.6ghz and start measuring load temperatures in Prime.
