Very first water cooling loop

Hi guys, so I've been itching to water cool ever since I first build my first PC but had no job it was a no go. Now 7 years later finally got the money for it, I've done 2 days of research for a "budget" build but my total came out to be $398.78 w/o tax and shipping, I was wondering if you kind gents and gals could suggest any cheaper alternative to the components below or a exceptional starter LC kit that performs better or slightly worst. I'm trying to OC my 3570K at 4.5 GHz or even more and ASUS DII boost clock to 1300sh and also planning to get another card and another RAD(1x140) later down the road.

Loop Configuration: RES>PUMP>CPU>RAD>GPU>RES

Components:

>EK-Supreme LTX (LIGHT Xtreme) CPU Water Block (Intel) - Acetal x1

>Swiftech MCP655™ Series 12 VDC Water Pumps - With Speed Control x1

>Swiftech MCP35X Reservoir - Rev. 2 x1

>Phobya 19/13mm (1/2-3/4") Compression Fitting Straight G1/4 - Compact - Silver Nickel Plated x2

>Phobya 19/13mm (1/2-3/4") Compression Fitting 45° Revolvable G1/4 - Knurled - Silver Nickel x4

>PrimoFlex Pro LRT UV Blue Tubing -1/2in. ID X 3/4in. OD x8

Questions
1) Is there anything I miss or anything I should replace to have meet with my budget of $350?
2) Does the speed controller on the pump vital for optimum performance?
3) Is the pump good enough for another GPU or
4) Are all my components the correct sizes
Thanks smile.gif

You will need high rpm fans for that rad.

Thanks for the quick reply smile.gif yeah kinda forgot about the fans, but the thing is I have a HAF XM case with 2 megaflows on top and I'm planning on getting 3 of the cougar fans doing a push and pull config.

You picked out a reservoir designed specifically for a pump that you didn't pick out (though the MCP35X is a good pump as well, and getting a pump/res combo will save you some room and some fittings.) The pump you chose should be able to handle another GPU block in the future if you choose to add it, but the MCP35X performs better in more restrictive loops than the 655. (Don't get me wrong, the 655 will still be just fine.)

The speed controller on the pump is nice to have for filling and bleeding (varying speed can help get air bubbles out), but it's by no means necessary. That pump is pretty inaudible at any speed setting.

Your sizes all look good, shouldn't be a problem there.

$30 fans when you're on a tight budget? I don't know much about the cougars, but excellent fans can be had for half that price.

So is a MCP35X strong enough to push water to the loop with 2 GPUs? Can you also recommend good fans haven't really bought anything other from newegg and amazon
post #6 of 20
Yep, the MCP35X is more than capable. Not much of a fan guy, waiting for others to chime in.

Popular fan people usually recommend or go with is the Scythe AP14/15. I personally like PWM fans so I went with a pair of these Cooljag Everflow 120mm x 25mm 9-Blade PWM Fan . It's the exact fan that comes with the Antec Kuhler H2O 920. Even though it's loud at full speed, but you can always set it to your liking (fan profile).

Couple things for you:

Anything you get from EK do not buy the nickel plated versions. They've had a bad reputation as of late for corrosion, and it hasn't been long enough to see whether their switch of nickel plating methods/company has paid off. Stick with their copper editions or get a different block.

I'd also reccomend dropping primoflex. They've had a lot of issues with plasticizer leeching on their tubing (aka it'll cloud up). If you want colored tubing go for feser, from what I've read they fare better, and I believe they're cheaper too.

As for the fans there are plenty of options. Here's a few most people choose:

Cougar Vortex (I use em and I'm happy with the results)
Scythe AP 15s (the accepted standard, pricey but good)
Noiseblocker multiframes or e-loops (e-loops are newer and so far have favorable reviews iirc, but still pricey)
Noctuas (pricey)
B.Gears
Corsair (I would probably go for the silent high flow/static pressure ones)

I think I'll just stick with the cougar fans, I actually have a 140 Cougar fan and happy with it hopefully the 120 would be the same, as far as the GPU block I can't find anything compatible for my Asus Direct II after hours of searching.. frown.gif so I'm guess i'm stuck to EK brand that has a bad rep for corrosion.
