I'd go FM2 for HTPC, no hesitation, with 30nm Samsung RAM clocked to 1866. Throw in a 128GB SSD as well, it will smoke.

agree.

+ in theory if you want more power you can do one of two things or both. Upgrade to the APU that follows trinity or go hybrid crossfire, or as said do both and keep the build ticking along for many years thumb.gif
post #13 of 19
What case are you using?

Any way, get the APU. I would get some Samsung Wonder RAM or what ever it's called. I heard it is dirt cheap in the US.

I would get an SSD. The Samsung 830 120GB is quite good.

What are you using the HTPC for? if you are only using for media and not games, get something like this. It does not take much to stream 1080p.

Agree with Ironman517

+1 for ITX and HTPC requirements... an A10 is probably an overkill too.

I have the ceton infintv 4 PCI-e card and if you are considering buying one you should see this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOikDU4Fn7s

Things they don't tell you. You have to dedicate tuners to each PC that you want to use, switching the number of tuners dedicated requires going through the set up again. Recorded programs can only be viewed on the PC they were recorded on (this is a Microsoft thing so probably applies to the HomerunHD too). I haven't had any problems with Ceton Drivers or missed programs. So the real issue is the tuner sharing.

If you are going to be recording tv then you will want a bigger HDD, as you will fill that SSD fast.

As far as graphics are concerned I prefer viewing video on a HDTV using AMD's solution better then Nvidia's. The catayst controls are well thought out making over scan adjustments easy.

I would consider going with the Ivybridge i3-3220 or even Intel Core i3-2120T Sandy Bridge. The reasoning behind these recommendations is this computer is likely to be on all the time and the lower thermal envelope of a 55watt CPU or 35 watt CPU will payback in lower power bills.

Likewise I would recommend low voltage memory too like this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231479&name=Desktop-Memory

Just make sure to check QVL of the motherboard for memory compatiblity.

If you do go with the homerun HD then you may want to reconsider itx form factor.
