Which new CPU and MoBo do you recommend with this setup?

Thread Starter
i just upgraded my GPU to the HD 6870.
the problem is i still use an intel core 2 duo E8400 3.0 gHz with a gigabyte EP43-DS3L board.
that means whichever CPU i upgrade to, i'll need to get a new motherboard alongside with it. and new DDR3 ram too.

i was hoping to find a nice dualcore or quadcore for under $150. which CPU and MoBo do you think is best suited?

do you live near a microcenter? they have great deals on CPUs/Motherbords. Do you have a prefrence of AMD/Intel? i personally prefer intel.

if you have $150 to spend on a CPU i would go with a Core i3 3225 3.3Ghz - $145

if you prefer AMD, i would look into AMD's new Trinity series A10-5800K 3.8Ghz - $130

unfortunately i live in canada and am not near any microcenters frown.gif
i don't have much experience with either, but i read up a bit on the trinity series. the thing is, i don't want to pay for their integrated graphics since i already have a dedicated GPU. may i ask why you chose those two in particular?

For intel id go with zer0d3gree's intel selection for CPU
For AMD, since u have a discrete graphics card, i wud either try and obtain a phenom or wait for pile driver. I think Pile Driver should be comin around really soon because Trinity APUs have just come out and they have the Pile Driver architecture.

thank you both for your suggestions. if i go with that intel CPU, would you happen to know a good mobo to recommend?

also wondering... do you think i'm benefiting from my GPU despite the outdated CPU?

I choose the i3 because it is within your price range and will be suitable for your needs. i choose the Trinity because i do not like Bulldozer. if you do not want integrated graphics, a phenom 072665995 suggested would be fine. bottom line - i would choose the i3 over both AMD's CPUs

why would you choose the i3 orver both AMDs, especially since it has less cores? i forgot to mention that aside from playing year-old games, i also want to do a lot of multi-tasking with browser tabs and music playback.

about $100-$150. i was hoping to find a good bundle somewhere, which is why i was close to getting the trinity CPU yesterday. i'm not sure to what extent is should be future-proofing on this budget, but i'd want to upgrade to at least DDR3 RAM.

from cpubenchmark, the i3 3225 gets a score of 4772 and the Phenom gets a score of 4169. not a big difference, however i believe that the i3 will be more "solid" in performance and it will have no trouble with your video card (i dont think the phenom will have a problem either, but the i3 should have better game performance from what i have heard) in the end it is up to you, but me personally, i would go with intel.
