Any benefit to SLI with todays games on one monitor?

Thread Starter
Any games I play.. BF3, Borderlands 2, etc etc, all run on ultra-high settings with a GTX670.. and I'm only using 1 monitor at 1920x1080.. I haven't done the FPS stuff yet, but if I don't see any problems, would there be any pay off to going SLI? or does the benefit come from having more than 1 monitor and splitting the game up between the two?
SLI is usually used for higher resolutions and multi-monitor setups. A 670 should be plenty for most games at 1080p.

That's what I was thinking.. It just makes me wonder at $400/card why I see so many people going SLI then only having 1 regular monitor

I have two monitors but just game on one at 1440p. Really does help with FPS. I can pull solid 60's for minimum FPS in each game because of it. With a single 680 at this res some games don't do well.

There is really no point to SLI/CF on a single monitor unless you are playing at 1440p or 1600p. If you see someone with a 1080p monitor and 2 graphics card it is either because they are using lower end cards, or strictly e-peen.

SLI/CF can be a headache and will always have some driver issues, so I would avoid it unless you need it. At 1080p, always go with a single powerful GPU in my opinion.

Or, you know, a 120 hz monitor. One GPU isn't going to push those frames on demanding games.

Even borderlands2 with it's toy graphics in heavy fire-fights with everything maxed out will not give you 60fps constantly, let alone 120hz as above. I'm fairly sure BF3 maxed out will drop below 60fps here and there though I haven't checked.

That's why some have SLI + for future games.

Most games a single GTX680 will max out and run games with utter fluidity above 60FPS without a sweat @ 1080p. Only times i've seen a single GTX680 dip considerably is with BF3 online in 64player maps. Although this is an issue with the engine not GPU horsepower. And it'll probably never be fixed...

One is more than enough for all games in fairness, just BF3 is badly coded for online.

Metro 2033 will also not run completely fluid on one 680.

For 100FPS+ in BF3 with 4XAA you need SLI, even at 1080P.
