First time building HTPC, need some advice.

Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to put together an HTPC to use mostly as a media server (PLEX). but also for backup. I'm going to have it running 24/7 and would like to keep it as quiet as possible.

Here is the breakdown of the components I have bought or am planning to purchase for this build:

OS: Not decided. I am a Windows user, but I wouldn't mind trying OS X. I actually may get components that will be compatible for hackintosh just in case I decide to go that route. Please recommend me what you think would be good for my type of build.
CPU: i5-3570K . Update - Purchased I understand this may be a little overkill. I'm open to suggestions. This CPU has HD4000 which should be able to handle 1080p content. I may decide to plug in a GPU down the road for light gaming.
Motherboard: Not decided.
Storage: 60GB OCZ Vertex II for OS (Purchased)
5 - Seagate Barracuda 3TB Purchased. Will be running RAID 5. Currently researching RAID controllers. I would appreciate any recommendations regarding a raid controller. All the decent ones I have found so far are $300+/
RAM: Not decided, but this isn't really a big factor.
GPU: None for now. I may get something decent for gaming later on. I have a HD4890 but they're pretty hot and power hungry. I would love some suggestions regarding a GPU with similar performance to HD4890 or better, but without the noise and power consumption.
PSU: Not decided. I may get 600W just in case I decide to get a GPU down the road.
Case: Most likely Lian Li PC-Q08R unless I find something better.

That's pretty much it. The components that I still need to buy: CPU, MOBO, RAM, CASE, RAID CARD, PSU.

Haven't decided on cooling yet. The CPU will not be OC'ed, but I may get an aftermarket cooler. I haven't looked into fans in a while, is Noctua still the go to company for quiet cooling?

Thanks!

I'd reccomend an APU Build

APU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113280

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128566

Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

and then a Case, 600watt PSU, and Win7 + your drives

that motherboard is RAID capeable out of the box, and an APU will offer much more balanced performance

Thanks for sharing. I will definitely look into it.

Is there a point of getting that CPU if I decide to get a dedicated video card?

Also, I'm going to be doing a hardware raid so it's not important if the MOBO supports raid.

Absolutely, you can buy a second video card and crossifire with the IGPU and get extra preformance

Yea. That's one of the reasons I was looking into getting an i5.

After doing some research, found out RAID controllers are pretty expensive. My focus has shifted on finding sometching that will work well in raid 5. I need something with at least 500mb of on board memory.

Update: There was a sale on the i5-3570K today so I snagged it for $180.

That answers that question.

Now I just gotta decide on Motherboard, RAID Card, PSU, and possibly a single slot GPU.
