First time building HTPC, need some advice. - Page 2

I really don't see how this is a HTPC, it looks more like a SFF server.... rolleyes.gif If you want a real HTPC, you dont need to spend more than $250... If you are using it as a file server you should be looking into a linux distro. And a file server needs less power than a HTPC when serving less than 10 HTPCs...

3570K... overkill but awesome chip. Also it powers down well at idle, so no real downside except it cost you more.

Asrock Z77E-ITX would mate with this chip well, has built in wifi and USB3 too. You are then half-way to a high-end build to be honest.

RAM... my preference is still Samsung 30nm

Case... all of this will fit easily into a SG05... the 300W PSU will be fine, even with a graphics card later, but you might want the 450W PSU just in case.

Just a thought... what computer have you got now? Use that as the HTPC and this new one as a mini-beast!

Cheers,

DB

I guess you're right. It's more of a hybrid sff/media server build smile.gif

Thanks for providing the parts list for a true server build. I may need to build something like that for my parent's and brother soon.

I think I'm going to get the Gigabyte Intel Z77 because of it's compatibility for hackintosh. I think I will dual booth OS X and Win 7 or 8. I will look into the Asrock mobo you suggested.

My current PC is my Sig rig.

I like that, Mini Beast!

Okay, since this is going to be your media server, I would probably grab the NZXT Source case, it has 8 HDD bays, so plenty of room for expansion and is a very well built case.

If you arent looking to overclock grab a H77 board.

Since you plan on adding a GPU, grab a Rosewill Green or Capstone 430W-550W, you should not need any more power than that. thumb.gif

Thanks for the recommendations.

I'm looking for something smaller, case wise. I'm looking into something like this .

Is this Noctua still the best and quietest CPU cooler on the market? I don't think I'm going be doing any overclocking. So maybe I can even buy a different heatsink and just use Noctua fans on it.

I'm also thinking about using these Noctua fans for the case. Don't really care about price, just want it as quiet as possible.

ITX I would definitely recommend the SG05 that I have, or the bigger SG07 if you want to use better air cooling.

I looked at the Lian-Li, as I wanted more space for water-cooling, but ended with the SG05, which I think is better for water than air... but that's my opinion only.

Bitfenix was the othercase I looked at, but more of a mATX case in my eyes... looks nice though.

A few ideas for you,

DB

I like the case that you have, but I really this Bitfenix case. I think it looks awesome. I've never heard of this brand, but they seem to have really good reviews. The only thing is the motherboard won't fit so I gotta find a mini-itx board if I go this route.

I most definitely agree with an Apu Build, Such as a Trinity APU with the integrated 7660D, will offer MUCH better video performance, and maybe slight lesser cpu performance for a much cheaper price. thumb.gif

You may or may not need the more power full Trinity 5800K.

This 65w TDP is better for a 24/7 htpc build.

APU does sound like a good way to go and I will most likely use it for my next build, but I already bought the i5 so I just need to find a motherboard and ram. preferably for less than $150.

I'm thinking about going with this RAM. Seems to have have really good reviews and is really cheap.
