First "real" pair of headphones... ~$300 budget, help me choose please

Okay, so I've finally gotten enough money to get myself a truly nice pair of headphones. I honestly have never owned a pair of headphones in my life; just petty $20 Skullcandy earbuds. However, I'm ready to make an investment in something truly nice that will last me year and I need help choosing; that is why I'm here before you today, OCN. tongue.gif

I'm sure before making a recommendation, you want to know what I want to use them for. Well, it's hard to say exactly, but I'd say 60% music and 40% games. I (mostly) listen to rap, dubstep, and various electronic music and I for the most part play FPS and RPGs. Anytime I look up information on headphones, people are always talking about amps. I'm fine with getting an amp, but one thing is key: I want these headphones to be able to work with a 3.5 mm jack so I can listen to music on the go as well. So if you're going to recommend me an amp as well, it would be nice if it was somewhat portable (if that's possible). Before you ask, yes I have read through OCN's most recommended Audio products. These are a few pairs of headphones I've heard good things about that are in my price range:

-Sennheiser HD 598
-Ultrasone PRO 750

Not much of a list, I know.. it's just simply I do not know much in the world of audio. All input is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced.

I suggest max $100 and save the rest of the money or I foresee some buyer's remorse. After that you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference especially in games and while listening to mp3s and especially without a stereo amp.

I'd also be using these for my computer.. and I take it there are no somewhat portable amps?

I'd buy a $150 pair of headphones and $150 on a sound card.

I agree with this to an extent.

personally i suggest you look at the website sweetwater, its music gear instead of pc gear, imo music gear sounds better than the gaming market stuff. but it all comes down to what you need or want, and all that stuff, size, noise canceling, all that stuff. I like the beyerdynamic 770 dt pro, 199 sometimes 149 but its takes a fair amount of research. like i said look at musicians friend, sweetwater, AMS, maybe thy wont have what you want but it will get you familiar with what makes head phones good or things to look for. good luck and i hope this helps.

My vote go to Ultrasone, though ATM I am rocking a pair of Q701s that have been fully broken in with an amp :D Things are beasts. Not a lot a bass, but they do have some to give you a small "thump"

And they are very reactive and neutral.

Why exactly would I spend so much on a sound card when I'm spending the same amount on the headphones themselves..

I know a good soundcard is essential, but as I said, I also want to use these on the go with a 3.5" jack if possible.

Do you know of any *decent* somewhat portable amps?

Titanium HD will help with gaming. Ultrasone Pro 550 will help with music and still be good for gaming.

Ultrasone is the opposite of neutral. It's V-shaped. (unless you mean your Q701s, in which case they lack too much bass to truly be neutral)

You don't need an amp of any kind with ultrasones.
