Setting up a hardware RAID1 after installing Windows?

Thread Starter
I have just built my first computer and installed Windows 7 onto the Samsung 256gb 830 SSD (with hard drives detached). I want to setup RAID1 between my two WD Red HDDs (2tb) but I don't want a software RAID in windows.

>I have looked up many guides and they are all pretty much saying how to do a hardware RAID for the C: drive (before installing Windows) or setting up a software RAID.
>I have tried going into the BIOS and enabling RAID and then spamming "ctr i" when restarting but the intel storage matrix doesn't come up.
>I have plugged both HDDs into the same controller on the ASUS Z77 VPro mobo.
>I have read the "everything you need to know about RAID" and haven't found anything that may help.

What I'm trying to ask is how do i setup a hardware RAID1 between two identical HDDs after I have installed Windows 7 on another SSD?
Thanks in advance for any help smile.gif

umm..uhh.yeah..
I'm not entirely sure it's possible..but here's how I would attempt it
a)set hdd in BIOS to RAID
b)set OS disk to non-RAID disk
c)setup RAID array with 2 disks in BIOS
d)install drivers onto OS
D may need to come before A..not sure..
I tried biggrin.gif

Positive the drives are in the Intel ports, do you see them in SATA config?

After you enable raid in the bios. You will then see a screen prompting you to hit Ctrl+I to enter raid setup. Then once in there you pick the two drives for raid-0 and then it will create the raid for you. Once in windows you should see them both as one drive. If not open computer management and format it. And then you should be good to go.

Sound like to me you didn't cut the raid on properly in the bios then. Double check and if you still don't see it, make 100% sure you have the drives on the right ports. If you still can't get in try another keyboard and don't spam the ctrl +I, just hit it one time. Thanks

It sounds like your using intels raid implementation found in their chipsets?

If so, you just need to install the Rapid Storage Technology drivers and you can configure it from within windows. Just because you configure it there does not mean its software raid.

Intel's implementation is kind of like a hybrid (hardware / software) from what I understand and it works the same way weather its configured in bios or windows.

I don't get prompted to press ctr i. The two HDDs are definately plugged into the top two dark blue coloured ports so they would be under the same controller. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ManMkbnnPhA&feature=plcp

I thought it was the two gray ports for the intel raid? As that two is sata 6 and the other one is sata 3 {blue}. Plus you aren't using the intel raid, you got the drives on the crappy Asmedia controller. Change ports and the intel raid should work . Either use the gray ports{sata 6} or the light blue ports {sata 3}. Thanks

I had the SSD and ODD on the intel and the 2 HDDs on the Asmedia but I've changed them over now and the Asmedia screen still comes up and I can't enter the BIOS for some reason (even though i press delete). It just goes straight to Windows without letting me go anywhere before hand.

Do you have another keyboard to try? If it is a usb try another port. Intel has its on raid to cut on. Jut like the Asmedia does in the bios. Thanks

I've sorted it all out now, thanks smile.gif
