Two monitors, different resolution?

Thread Starter
Hi. I just installed Linux Mint 13 today, and stumbled upon something i can't fix myself.
I have 2 monitors, 1 connected via DVI with the resolution 1680x1050 and my TV which is connected through a Onkyo receiver. This also has the resolution 1680x1050, but i want it to have 1920x1080, like i had it when i was using Windows 7. Also i don't want it to "mirror" what is on my main monitor. I tried setting this in the "Monitors" settings without any luck. And yes, i installed the proprietary drivers.

Does anyone have a sollution?

EDIT: The activitties happening on my TV seem to be "lagging". Like, if i watch a movie, everything is smooth on my main monitor, but the motions on my TV is kinda choppy.

EDIT 2: To anyone reading this thread late, i updated my post, describing simple steps on how i fixed most of the problems i had.

I also have an audio Issue. I can't get 5.1 sound through the HDMI output, but i get stereo sound.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I have now managed to set the correct resolutions, by using the drivers from ATI as well as Catalyst Control Center, but now there's a new problem.
How do i set primary monitor? CCC doesn't seem to have this option.

And this remains a problem, actions or motions seems laggy on my TV.
This is also a bump for my thread.

EDIT: Somehow, by tinkering ALOT with settings and stuff, the lagging is gone (don't know how though)
Now, i only need to figure out how to set primary monitor.

Last EDIT: Forget this whole thread. By complaining and getting frustrated, i managed to get things right. Resolutions are now OK, the lagging is gone and primary monitor has been set.

Thanks for letting me complain a little, thread may now be closed and deleted.

It's ok. But do you have a solution to my last problem? About the 5.1 (6 channel) surround sound? It hurts my brain just to think about it now.

I have no idea, but I'll take a look later.
You have the option to use the HDMI out in your sound settings, correct? Does it give you any channel options? Try using a program that has it's own output options to see if you can get 5.1.

This thread might be relevant: http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?71646-Radeon-DRM-Finally-Has-HD-6000-Series-HDMI-Audio/page3

Also, may I ask what were the solutions to your other problems?

Thank you.
The available options are "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output" or "Off". I find this very annoying since i watch alot of movies with surround sound.
I should also mention that my receiver is connected directly to my computer, so there souldn't be any other devices "blocking" the signal.

The solution to the "resolution problem" was that i had installed the proprietary driver you can install directly through Linux Mints menu (don't do that), so i got the drivers from ATI instead.
Also i finally thought i should run the "settings" as superuser (sudo amdcccle).

Setting the correct monitor as primary was as easy as:
xrandr -q
identify the monitorname
xrandr --output --primary

To "remove" the lagging Open Catalyst Control Center,, go to Display Manater, then click on the desired monitor (TV in my case), click the tab "HDTV", below you can se the box "Preconfigured and custom HDTV-formats" (translating from norwegian here). Click on desired resolution and refreshrate, click on "Use format" (or something similar), and you should be done.

Depending on the TV the chip may be related to resolution (which might have gotten fixed with the CCC). You might also get more TV luck (picture) if you use it's native res, or something that downscales/upscales well with it's native res. If it allows, post processing might also effect things as some TVs do that natrually.

As for sound, you ONLY have the HDMI for audio? No onboard/spdif?

I do have onboard sound on my motherboard, but my graphicscard has the only HDMI output, which i intend to keep using (as long as it is possible, if not i'm going back to Windows)

Then it should work, probably needs to be set. You could also try blacklisting the onboard audio just so you know all audio would be piped through the only "working" sound. Personally I have optical/coax spdif outputs on my PC so I can just run it through that. My onboard itself is blown, think the DAC got shot when I was trying to record my guitar. =( Either way, digi out works here, if you had that I'd suggest using it. Your receiver require HDMI? Or you using the TV?

It doesn't require HDMI, but it's what i have. My receiver is the first device connected, then the TV is connected to my receiver.
Also, how would i "blacklist" or disable the onboard audio?
