essentially similar to this graph, take the 670, give it a relative 20% boost, then make the line more linear rather than drop off after 4x MSAA. That would be what id expect after changing the bus size to 384.

Is TH a reliable source man? Everyone on here seems to bash TH.

Sometimes they are, and sometime they aren't. And when they aren't, they're really bad. It's mostly their journalism that's the problem, not the data they collect, IMO.

it sometimes is off on straight up tests. but I like how they approach things that aren't normally tested, and this was one of the general ones to see how much memory bus size would affect performance, which is true to the most part and is the reason why AMD does much better in heavy anti aliasing and higher resolution for this current generation.

their team is a global team, some of the members do far better than other members during their tests I would think.

edit: examples of tests that other sites don't do as much what TH did off the top of my head were things like:
CPU effectiveness in Guild Wars 2(which showed how GW2 didnt like the AMD processors)
Minimum card requirement for D3
Their latest test to compare W8 to W7
Case price range testing
partially motherboard testing(which was one of the reasons why the Z77 extreme4 sparked in popularity)

and such, rather than only test and review new hardware when it arrives.

Lets hope their locked voltage can keep on-par with AMDs unlocked 8970 cause if not it looks like it's time to switch over.

Look at it this way. If HD 8970 @ Launch is 20% faster then HD 7970 its actually 30-40% faster then HD 7970 @ Launch. Thats because GCN was a new generation. Kepler is too. AMD/Nvidia will just improve on what they have. After they do the refresh then they will release something better. It has always been this game unless they where forced too.

Nvidia

8800GTX -> Fast
9800GTX -> As fast more efficent
GTX280 -> Fast
GTX480 -> Fast, They where forced to
GTX580 -> A bit faster
GTX680- Fast aka 7970.

You forgot the GTX 285, nVidia do a tick-tock like thing similar to Intel but instead of shrinking they may just refine the GPU.

Nvidia is only going to release the big Kepler chip (gf110) if amd pulls a monster out, which isn't going to happen, so they will keep the gk104 for gtx780 making more profit, rather then pulling out the gf110 and making less profit.. but nvidia getting rid of voltage control is going to kill them in the long run if they keep that up!

I hope nvidia saves the gf110 for the first Maxwell lineup!

Yeah. I don't see things going well after the voltage control episode. Unfortunately. It will be a tough decision between the 780 and the 8970 if this is true.

Anyway, Maxwell is presumably going to be a huge performance leap and far stronger. As for GK110 business, nvidia will release that chip if and when it is profitable for them. They aren't in the business of simply responding to what AMD does as far as gpu power.

Yes Maxwell is code name for there next architecture and yes I meant gk110. Maxwell according to nvidia is supposed to be a huge gain over Kepler, and seeing how good the good the gk104 did from Fermi > Kepler , imagine how good the gk110 would be from Fermi > Maxwell .. I'm just hoping for a big chip from nvidia for nvidia instead of milking us for gk104 because it gets good yeilds in comparison to what amd has with there next architecture.

And by the time Maxwell comes out ps4 and xbox720 should be out, and PC games will hopefully be better then they are at the moment and need more horsepower!

Till something changes my PC will stay the same for abit because it easily maxes anything I throw at it!

it's true that the jump is supposed to be bigger, which is good for us in the end. as this current process matures things should get better as far as yields. I'm not sure if Maxwell will be on the same process though. I welcome such an advance in gpu technology. it's not even soly about the raw power either. this 15% rumor is likely not true anyway as right after this a new one popped up about GK110 being used. nvidia have stated they like the efficiency route and the full spec GK110 does present a drawback in that area, but they don't have to use the full 2880 cores to get a nice jump over the 680. the core difference isn't the big deal with kepler so far as the 670 is right up there with the 680 (but that's the 32 ROP, 256bit GK104) so efficiency may not be an issue with getting the GK110 onto the desktop. we'll see.

I can't wait for the 780 to hit the reviews so that I can contemplate upgrading from 570s in SLI. smile.gif
