yeah, i'm going to try to sand some of it off of the core. its all that solder thats 1/2 way stuck on it. it didn't rip the core out, it just left a lot of crap that you can't rub off w/ alcohol or 100 proof whiskey =/

Maybe you should try 180 proof.

Use B151, White Lightning + some gasoline and wipe that sucker off.

(Just kidding.)

I wish i could remember where i saw the article about removing the ihs. The guy made a nice point about the way it was secured to the chip's die. I think that most of what is left on the die itself is actually a kind of epoxy. The core is the small square black thing in the middle of the die. I dont remember reading anything about the IHS being soldered to anything. I would think that youd have to seriously try(like cracking it or something) to get the core off of the die. I definately wouldnt be lapping the core, pushing a little to hard could be bad. So long as the leftovers on the die arent high enough to impede the contact of the hsf to the core i would just put some as5 on it an try it. Id like to add that the processor that i was looking at wasnt a conroe, i do believe that it was a prescott(s478). I dont know id that celeron is on the LGA775 or not. If it is i wouldnt have done it simple due to the load bearing of the IHS itself. That may have had alot to due with why that e6700 in the article above didnt post.
