Hello there guys,

I am pretty new to owning the EVGA classified SR-2 series board, and have obtained 2 of them so I cant wait to get them running...

One I bought brand new, and the other with in a deal with two processors. This will also be my first time water cooling as well, I have a few CPU blocks, and also the Koolance waterblock for the VRMs and chipset, (apparently a rare item now)

One I plan to try and get working with an ES W5580 Xeon, which was being used on my Z8PE-D18, and the other board will be equipped with 2x Xeon X5680's. I am wondering what advice people would give me as to the best way I can obtain the optimal over-clock settings for those CPUs. I am also open to comments about the boards themselves, if they have any oddities etc.

Cheers

This is the retail board fitted with the following for the photo:

1x EVGA GTX 680 classified GPU
1x IBM M1015 6gbps SAS/SATA PCIe adapter
1x Intel Neteffect NE020 CX4 Cluster adapter 10Gbps.
1x Phobya bench Chassis

Processors to come.

Oddly enough, another member PM-ed me about the same query. So I guess it may help some other members here if I reposted my message here:

Here are some of my late night readings before I did my overclock for my SR-2
- Shamino's SR-2 BIOS Template
- [H]ard Forum - SR-2 Optimization Thread

These are some of the general guidelines on how to overclock your Nehalem i7
- Memory Frequency Guide
- How to Overclock i7

To be honest, this mobo can be quite cumbersome to overclock (you're overclocking two Xeons in tandem), so your patience is mostly required here. Plus, make sure you plug in all the necessary power point on the mobo (e.g. additional 8 pin connectors for CPU, additional power for slot 5 & 7, etc) - so, a good power supply is a must. Pay attention to all of the nooks and cranny on the motherboard. Once you've done with your optimum overclock setting, give it a test by running F@H (in Linux or VM Linux from Win7) for, say a week.

Keep posting for any queries here, I believe some members will be able to give you some good tips.

Thanks for the advice, currently I am in Holland, and my parts are waiting for me back in England, so I am dying to get home and fire it up stock to see what Wprime results I get at least. smile.gif (my quickest is about 9.5 on the single W5580 @ stock frequencies on the Z8PE-D18)

Regarding the PSU, I got an OCZ 1250W PSU, which is one of those cable management types, so it has a lot of outputs available.

Like I say stock is what I'll run initially to wet my feet, and I appreciate the notes you left, thank you.

I just finished my first water cooling and case modding build. I'm now planning my next project. I'm looking to build a dual CPU machine on a moderate budget. I don't know anything about the Xeon chip differences but I was looking at the E5-2620's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117269 and this for a motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121589. How does this mobo compare to the EVGA SR?? that I see used in these types of builds?

Can I still use a SLI/Xfire setup for graphics? I already have 2 7970's. Do these chips over clock? Can I use normal RAM? What else should I be aware of?

As far as what it will be used for...moot point, just because I want too smile.gif

Thanks Guys

Edit: I started my own thread with this but I'd thought I'd put it here too...B-Neg always seems to be helpful
