Higher CPU clock vs Higher RAM frequency

Hi everyone, I know this is a pretty basic question and I think I already know which would be better but I though I'd ask anyway to make sure.

So my problem is do I have my sig rig running at 3510 MHz cpu frequency and something like 1250 MHz ram at CL8 or do I have a slightly lower cpu overclock of around 3300 MHz and have the ram frequency at around 1450 MHz CL9?

IMO there is little difference between them so it probably isn't going to matter either way but I would like my rig to set up so that it performs as well as it can whilst gaming. The stock frequency for the ram is 1333 MHz at CL9. Also there is a very slight possibility of getting the CPU up to 3600 MHz if that makes any difference.

Higher CPU overclock is more beneficial than memory clock in this case. Just try to tighten down the RAM timings as much as possible. AMD systems benefit more fro tighter timings than higher speed on memory. IIRC, my Athlon II x4 620 is clocked at 3.25Ghz with the RAM at 1333Mhz CL6-6-6-21 1T.

I highly doubt there will be any noticeable difference, especially for gaming. Purely theoretically, the higher ram speed should net you a larger performance increase (16% increase between 1250MHz and 1450MHz, as compared to 6% increase for CPU from 3.3GHz to 3.5GHz. Also, even with higher timings, you're actually losing less time because of the clock speed ( 0.62% @1450MHz CL9 as opposed to 0.64% @1250MHz CL8)), Even if CPU could get to 3.6GHz you'd only get a 9% boost, so theoretically the RAM is the way to go. In practice you won't notice any of this, so it doesn't matter a bit tongue.gif

Latency changes as well, not a valid comparison, IMHO.

P.S. Stick to the fastest CPU clocks you can get, and then try and reduce the timing values for the RAM...

Speculation at best. Comparing by clock increase percentage is only valid if the performance gains are equivalent. i.e. 1% CPU OC == 1% RAM OC. That isn't the case.

CPU speed beats RAM anyday and this won't change in the near future with current architecture. On games ofc. Memory matters more on other things as image editing and encoding.

You are on value ram. You could try something like 1100-1150 cl7 if you can get stable. Timings are the key. Even thou I'm on Intel, I'm getting better mem scores than stock 2133mhz because my ram is a tweaked low latency but native 1866mhz @ cl8
