So how did re-partitioning go? Same problem?

Try a test install of 2 partitions - one for swap (only a couple of gig for this one), and one for /. Does it still fail?

Oh, by the way, Lubuntu 12.10 is due out in the next few days, might be worth holding out till then....

Just tried installing it with only / and swap, still no go... Then I get a old Ubuntu CD (11.04) and install it to see if it's Lubuntu problem or not, but the same thing happen again frown.gif

BTW I m installing it without Internet connection, could this be the cause of the problem? I didn't activate Internet connection because the update is too slow. Although theoretically my connection should be fast enough to finish update within 30+ min.

Nope, you shouldn't need an internet connection. I'm concerned that the problem appears to be around partitioning, as the error related to a partition being larger than the disc. But as this is repeatable, it suggests that it wasn't a one-off glitch.

Try re-installing again, but leave say, 10mb of unallocated space at the end of the drive. You shouldn't have to, but there's something weird going on

Tried that just now, around 500MB free space behind, still got the "unknown filesystem" error after reboot mad.gif I'm kinda puzzled now, I used to be able to install Linux (any) on the 2nd hard drive on this computer, now Linux just refuse to run with XP alongside on 1 single drive headscratch.gif

If your windows is borked, it would be easiest to fix the windows boot loader (fixmbr or whatever). Get XP booting, then use a liveCD to install grub to the root drive (sdX) and everything should be fine. I just know you always have to fix the windows boot process first, then fix linux, as things get mucky if you fix windows last.

[edit] After reading the partition problems... You should format the disc to two primaries, install XP, then linux. ALWAYS install XP first, or at least make sure you have a working, bootable, XP system. If you have it working now and still have partition problems, delete all partitions you can in windows. Make sure it's unpartitioned space and that windows boots. You can install w/o internet, that should get you a working system. I would suggest the latest *buntu variant too but that's me.

[edit2] Oh, and I forgot to add, journalling space should be created automatically. it sounds as if you have a grub/initrid problem. Unknown filesystem makes me think you either used something that can't boot (fs) or your initrid/grub setup isn't seeing your root fs properly and trying to mount the wrong partition?

Yeah, I did wonder whether grub is trying to use the initrd to boot the XP partition (haven't had my cup of tea yet though!) That's why I said about the re-install of Ubuntu, to give it another chance to generate a new GRUB

XP is my current primary OS, when I install Lubuntu I partition disk into / (primary), /home (logical) and swap (logical). I format the Linux partition into free space everytime after the fail installation.

I've try to install Lubuntu a lot ever since the problem arise, what if grub is trying to boot the XP? what should I do instead?

The following is my planned partition when I try to install *buntu, anything wrong?

{Windows - 232GB primary} {Lubuntu / - 25GB ext4 primary}{/home 200+GB ext4 logical}{4GB swap ext4 logical}

You need to delete that partitions, not just format the free space (I think the problem lies with the partition table, not the filesystems). Be VERY careful not to delete the whole partition table though, or you'll wipe your XP install! Resizing them might work if you can't delete them, as it should cause the partitioner to rewrite them (again, leave the XP partition well alone)

This might fix things, if that's true though he might need to format the whole drive and start from scratch. From what I see, nothing should be giving an error out. Bad install medium? Idk, seems very weird as I've done similar. I've set it up both with XP at the front/back of a drive in close to the same layout as this.
