Don't be in too much of a rush to break the bank and "help the cause". The game has the potential to be awesome, but Roberts initially billed the cost of the game at a couple million dollars in his initial crowd-funding pleas. As soon as that threshold was crossed he recanted on his earlier claim and instead "clarified" that the $2 million was what he needed to get other investors on board, and that the real cost of the game was going to exceed $10 million in development costs. Around the time that announcement came out, he shifted gears from his own website's crowd-funding and expanded onto Kickstarter.

I legitimately hope that Star Citizen turns out to be an awesome game and I've enjoyed his past work, primarily the Wing Commander series. What does concern me is how "flexible" Roberts has been with the truth. I don't think he's out to rip anyone off, but that trend of half-truths will eventually result in a massive crowd-funded vaporware somewhere down the line and probably be the death of games on Kickstarter.

I can't prove it, but I think you're a bit off here. I've been following Star Citizen since before the funding campaign started. He was pretty honest about having investors ready to put "real money" down if the public can show support for Space Sims by reaching a 2 million goal. I never remember him "clarifying" or "oh by the way-ing" anything. I followed everything very closely. I even had a desktop RSS feed notifier set up for instant notifications on their comm-link/news section.

Knightsilver, if you'd like to help out the cause, they offer a subscription option. $10 or $20 a month. I just added on the $10 a month last night because I wanted to see the advanced content, and I ended up spending the rest of the evening with my eyes popping out of my head. Can't wait for the third issue. Check out details on their website.

I've been following the Star Citizen crowd-funding since it was announced as well. I also donated some money up front. It wasn't advertised about needing crowd-funding solely to bring investors on board until well after his own site's crowd-funding was underway.

I wouldn't call it being flexible with the truth. He knew he needed 2 million to get the rest of the funding. If he had thrown out the 12 million number from the beginning, under any context, everyone would have thought it was a scam or a joke. People on the internet are just as bad at reading what they want to read as people in reality are at seeing what they want to see, and all of the fearmongers would have jumped on that number for no reason other than their own ignorance. With crap like reddit and twitter that could have easily snowballed into something that killed the campaign. Instead the campaign succeeded because of reddit and twitter.

When people come across something unfamiliar our first instinct is to fear it. That instinct kept us alive for a long time. Roberts did well in keeping everything about his crowdfunding campaign familiar enough that people wouldn't crucify it. And he had good reason to go outside the typical model also. Kickstarter needs a good bit of restructuring.

I truly sympathize with his possible motives, and I agree that Kickstarter's model is problematic. However, he still told people one thing up front and had no qualms asking for their money when he knew the reality was quite a bit different. I'm a bit ambivalent about the situation honestly. On one hand Roberts was potentially in a tough spot as you highlighted in your post, but on the other hand it sets a precedent for potentially less scrupulous or even simply less talented people to do the same and ultimately result in a million dollar vaporware, or worse a product that should have remained vaporware.
