7680x1600, Should I go with 4GB 680s or 7970s? - Page 2

You won't be able to game with either of those choices.

Dude, I agree with amstech, 2 cards is not enough for these resolutions. With this setup, its barely playable at 5760x1080, how do you think they'll perform @ 7680x1600??

If you only have money for 2 7970s or 680s, that means you have around 850 - 950$. Get 3X 7950 which is the only choice for your setup to get decent fps.

7950 (313$):

If you have a little more cash, then the 670 (371$):

Well considering that I could play most games at the highest settings (not highest AA of course) with 2x 3GB 580s I'm going to assume that I'll get better performance with 680s or 7970s than the 580s.

I actually have $1200 to spend and was thinking about the EVGA 680 4GB FTWs or possibly Classifieds $550 and $560 respectively.

Have you played games at this high of a resolution before? Most of the time it's not quite as taxing as most people who haven't actually tried it seem to think (not saying you in particular, just that I see people constantly overstating how taxing this res actually is on graphics cards).

Yes it's certainly a high res and I agree that I will need a third card, but instead of buying 3x 7950s or 3x 670s right now, I'd rather have 2 higher powered cards now and add a third (will be doing this soon anyway) and not regret buying the lower cards when I have the money for the 3rd 680/7970.

I had 2x 3GB 580s running at this res since they were released last May and I have been able to run almost anything just fine. Unfortunately I had to sell the cards when I fell on financial hard times. Now that I have money to replace them I'd like to get cards of the newer generation. If 2x 580s gave decent to good performance at this res, I don't see how the newer generation cards won't be even better.

I think that the performance hit associated with running this resolution is overstated most of the time. Obviously AA has the biggest hit on performance and therefore very high levels can't be used a this res, but other than AA most games will run fine with 2x 680s I am assuming based on my experience with 2x 580s. And like I said I will be getting a third soon anyway.

So you spend that money to play at low IQ settings with normal fps?

I am playing at the highest settings with the exception of AA (I can usually get 4xAA at least). If this is considered low IQ than I don't know. If you think 2x-3x 4GB 680s isn't enough then what would you suggest? There really isn't anything better to get. I guess 4x 680s but I don't think 4 way scaling is worth the extra expense at this point in time.

There's no way you are running ultra in BF3.

If more RAM is better for higher resolutions then 2x EVGA GTX 680 classified with 4 GB each or 2x Sapphire 7970 GHz Edition Vapor X with 6 GB RAM sould be able to run just about anything dont think that 3 card is needed unless you are going to be playing Metro 2033/Metro Last Light at that resolution with 8 or 16xAA
