That isn't necessarily true. Closed-backs actually can stifle the bass because the driver can't move as freely. That's why the DT770 has little holes at the front of each cup just as a port for the bass.

So what headphones does everyone recommend for my needs?
I have the audio-technica ATH-M50 and they are fantastic. They are great for music and sound effects. They sound absolutely awesome in shooter games. Combine them with a decent sound card and you have a great sound for pretty cheap. Got mine for 109.99$ on sale from this website: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/ATH-M50 Just select brand new in the option menu and then under the 50$ rebate black/yellow button select 50$ off. When you get to the cart, enter the code ATH-M50-NEW-40 and voila! (Can't believe they still have this rebate, bought mine a year ago tongue.gif)
Good luck!

What if I use the on board Audio of the Asus Rampage IV Extreme... Would these still be worth investing in?

Do I need a Headphone amp? or would a decent sound card work just fine?

Do I need one at all or would the On board one work fine?

On-board or any sound card can easily power them. They don't require much. The sound card will almost definitely have a better DAC though.

Anyone recommend a good card. I have invested into my computer in every aspect but the sound. However I must say I am only planning to use these when the wife needs to study.

What is DAC?

Digital-Analog Converter. It's what turns the 1's and 0's into something the headphones can produce sound with. The amp part just amplifies the analog signal that the DAC feeds it.

I'm partial to ASUS cards and their drivers for them if you're going the sound card route. Just get the one in your price range. They make several.

Also how quiet are the M50's? My wife and I share a home office. We have desks about 3-5 feet apart. I don't want her to be able to hear what im listening to esp. when she is studying.

Thanks
