Need help picking out decent budget computer speakers

Thread Starter
I am looking to upgrade my computer speakers but I wanted to ask for some advice since I really don't know what I am doing. I am pretty tech-savy but when it comes to speakers I only have experience buying headphones. Right now I have a 2.1 computer speaker setup, the 2 speakers need to be replaced. The subwoofer is good and can stay, however, I dont know how to hook it up with new speakers. Right now my subwoofer is connected to my directly to my speakers through a jack (I don't know the size, it is definitely not a 3.5mm and it is comparable in size to a PS/2 keyboard connection in size and shape. It has its own power cord so that wont be an issue.

So basically I have 2 questions:
-First, what do I need to do about the "PS/2 like connection" to ensure it works with new speakers. Do I need to buy speakers that can connect directly to this? Or can I hook the subwoofer up to my computer directly, and also have by new speakers hooked up directly to my computer?

-Second, I am in a college dorm but I will be moving in to a house next year where I won't have to worry about sound disturbance. I am not looking for anything to fill a party however, mainly will be used for listening to music in a small room. They may also be used to hook up to a mic set that I use when I play guitar/sing (mainly acoustic in small settings so again I don't need anything that will blast.
Most of the time though I will just be using it to listen to music, sometimes movies or video games.

-My budget is under $100

So far I have looked at these for their size/versatility/ratings:

or

or
http://www.amazon.com/Genius-SP-HF1800A-Three-way-Hi-Fi-Speakers/dp/B0041Q9PZ0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Right now I am leaning towards the Genius speakers. Opinions? Thanks for the help in advance.

i don't have personal experience with this, but you could go with Steve Guttenberg's Audiophiliac $70 budget setup.

Lepai LP-2020A+ Class-T amp
Dayton Audio B652 speakers
+ any necessary cables

this wouldn't use your existing sub. i have a feeling it'd still sound better than any typical 'PC 2.1' setup. this is definitely a budget setup i'd be looking at if i were shopping for one.

The one I suggested is 38 watts RMS.....Guttenburg's is only 20 watts.

I win!
