Mice Without A Wheel?

Thread Starter
Are there any good mice out there without a wheel, or with the wheel moved under your thumb?

Most mice are so cramped, that I end up with my middle finger on the right button instead of the wheel, and my finger is starting to hurt when using a wheel these days. I'd be much happier using Mouse 4/5 to scroll rather than a wheel, or have a thumb wheel instead, so I can rest my hand flat on the mouse. Most of the time I try to use Mouse 3 to scroll instead of a wheel anyway.

So far I have only found one mouse like this, but I bet the sensor is not suited for gaming. (probably has angle snapping/acceleration)

Huh? I use my middle finger for the right mouse button and my index finger for the left one, I just move the middle finger to use the wheel/click it.. Try doing that? Or check out Logitech's new fancy Windows 8 mice, they look nice and fit what you need.

moves under the thumb tongue.gif though not quite a traditional mouse but I use this because a trigger style mouse is more comfortable for my hand.

Seriously though, you're not supposed to have your middle finger on the mouse wheel. If you really want to use the mouse that way, I'd suggest the Deathadder as it's fairly comfortable to hold like that (even though it's wrong!)

Funny thing about that, I used to hold the mouse middle finger on mouse 2 till I got my RAT 3 which seems more comfortable to hold with my middle finger on the wheel.

I've actually never had the pleasure of playing with one of those. I always wanted to, just for the experience (cause they look so fun to play with tongue.gif), But I could never justify the high cost for what essentially would be a functional downgrade. The new MMO version almost won me over, but then I don't really play MMOs as much any more and that thing is even more expensive and still has the inferior sensor x.x

I'll trust you that its comfy to hold like that.

If I use my middle finger on the right button rather than my ring finger, half my hand is completely unsupported and is hanging off the side of the mouse with most mice.
In games, it means you have to keep moving your finger in order to use the wheel or the middle button, which is a big disadvantage.

It seems like a wider mouse without a wheel, but three buttons instead, would let your hand always sit flat, and give you three buttons directly under your fingers, rather than two.
My index finger suffers from enough RSI already without using it for the wheel. (it's bad enough that I have bought a Topre keyboard, and changed keyboard layouts to QGMLWB to try and help that)

The mouse wheel in general just seems a really bad design ergonomically, and I don't really need it. I use Mouse 3 to scroll, and it's just as easy to change weapons in a game using the keyboard as it is to scroll the mouse.

The FPS gun seems interesting, but it looks like you would lose a lot of accuracy controlling the cursor like that, and it encourages wrist twisting to move the cursor.

There's the Microsoft, Logitech and Apple touch mice that have trackpad tech like the Magic Mouse. However they are not really suited for gaming either.

I don't know about the newly announced T400 mouse, but you can't right-click on the others without lifting your left finger, which is completely unusable to me. I doubt you can rest your hand on the mouse with the T400 either, even if it has dedicated left/right buttons to the side of the central touch area. (seems like that may be the case?) No side buttons on that either, and I don't like the look of the rubber sides. (nightmare for cleaning, surely)

Index finger on LMB

The middle finger on the RMB

When scrolling use your Index finger

If in some rare occasions (while gaming) you really NEED to use the LMB, then I use the middle finger for the wheel...
