Controller for RAID 5

post #1 of 32
Thread Starter
I have bought 5 Seagate 3TB drives for the HTPC media sever I'm building. I know need to find a solid raid controller to set up RAID 5. My budget has changed recently when I found out how expensive raid controllers can be.

From what I've been told the most important part of selecting a raid controller for RAID 5 is to have decent amount of on board memory and I've been told that 500 MB should be enough. The media server will be running 24/7.

I'm most likely going to be using Windows 7 or OS X.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

@OP

If you're going to be running Windows, try picking up a cheap Dell PERC 5/i or PERC 6/i off eBay, then use the sticky in this sub-forum for guidance. If you're going to be running OS X, then you'll probably need to look at LSI, CalDigit or Areca. Bare Feats has a large number of reviews of Mac RAID cards.

PERC 5/i's and 6/i's don't support 3TB drives.

Thanks for the help.

I thought about getting a perc card but it only has 256 MB of on board ram which may be limiting.

I'll check out the brands you mentioned.

Good...point. OK then, substitute them for Dell H700. smile.gif

@OP

Unless you're running a database server or a web server, I wouldn't worry. Additionally, since this is a media server, the files you (sequentially) copy to/from it will be far bigger than the cache, so it'll be of little help anyway.

cheap dell perc i5 or a 600 dollar intel raid controller. LSI (card you just linked) makes decent raid cards.

I confirmed the LSI card works with OS X, I just need to check if it will work with Hackintosh.
