Controller for RAID 5 - Page 3

I can't speak for the LSI, but I have used both Highpoint and Adaptec RAID controllers over the last several years. The Highpoints work decent enough, but their interface & software is a bit clunky. The Adaptecs work wonderfully and the interface & software is super user friendly, but they do not "officially" support UEFI type BIOS. ( you can get them to work with the latest BIOS set... usually)

In either case make sure you get a dedicated slot cooler that blows cool air onto the bottom (heatsink) side of the controller. All RAID cards tend to get scorching hot under load and will start to throw errors if they are allowed to overheat.

Thanks Dante.

What type of drives are you using in your server? I'm going to be using 3TB drives and I want to make sure this card will work.

I'm guessing since this is a HP card it will probably not work with OSX x86.

I'm not very familiar with RAID Cards. As long as I install it in the correct PCI slots, it should work with any motherboard, right?

You should do a search for your motherboard against the RAID card that you plan on getting.
Not all cards work with all boards.

Yea, that's the hard part cause some of these RAID cards, the HP for example, I can't even find enough information on it, let alone the compatibility with motherboards.

Thanks for the tip, didn't realize RAID cards can get that hot.

LSI controllers are good. Runs great when you get the right stuff to work with each other. Terrible customer support. I was installing a raid card for a server and I got these parts that I "needed" according to the website and a customer service rep. After I got the parts I called again and they said I didn't need the battery backup adaptor,it was only $40 so I didnt care.

I'm running 4x3TB drives in RAID5. I don't really know much about compatibility though and I don't believe there is much documentation outside or support outside of HP servers.

Most of the Raid Controller that have 2 x SFF-8087 cost a lot of money and I'm only going to be connecting 5 drives. Is is possible to buy an expander that will allow me to connect 5 drives?

I believe you can do up to 4 SATA drives on each SFF-8087 port using one of these: http://www.amazon.com/HighPoint-Internal-Mini-SAS-SFF8087-Int-MS-1M4S/dp/B001L9DU88

This would give you a total of up to 8 SATA drives on a single 2 port RAID card. I beleive the HP RAID card that I listed will support up to 16 drives but it requires a special expander card.

These cables work perfectly, they will take each SFF8087 and break it into 4 SATA cables. I actually use them in nearly all my server builds, but be warned they are 36" long so make sure you are using a tower to avoid routing complications. Some RAID cards do support "Expander Cards", but you will end up paying upwards of $150~$250 just for the expander. Best advice at this point if you are hard set on having hardware RAID would be to buy an 8-port SATA card or a 2-port SAS card, you will eventually need to expand your array and having a spare port or three makes it pretty easy.

Also,
RAID RAM in your case won't matter. You won't hit the card hard enough to slow it down.
Also, Also,
The optional battery is only really used if you require the fastest set up possible (you don't =P) it allows you to set the card to write-back rather than write-though and is used mainly for when you loose power to save date that has yet to be written.

Would having at least 128MB of ram do any good. I just want to make sure my system is not completely slow because of the RAID controller.

I'm going to do some more research. The RAID card is the only thing that's holding back my build and it's driving me crazy. I'm at work all day so I don't really have time to research stuff during the week.
