I'm going to do some more research. The RAID card is the only thing that's holding back my build and it's driving me crazy. I'm at work all day so I don't really have time to research stuff during the week.

From what I understand, some on board ram is highly recommend and, in some cases, required for RAID 5. That also means that if you want a completely reliable setup you will want a battery to keep the unwritten data from becoming lost or the array from becoming corrupt.

If you're only doing a media server you should seriously consider unRAID or FlexRAID as performance isn't very important and you'll have more flexibility and still have redundancy, not to mention that it will cost a lot less as you don't need a hardware RAID card.

EDIT: Maybe I missed something but a good software RAID might be what you're looking for.

The only thing that sucks about unRaid is that I'm planning to use my PC as an HTPC and having unRaid running off a USB kills it for me.

I may just return the i5 and get a RAID 5 enclosure.
