First Build - Oct 27th - My dream machine - Advice welcome! (n00b here)

Thread Starter
Hi guys! I have been lurking these forums for months (Please read my welcome post) and have been gaining a ton of info for my first ever build.

It is (within reason) my dream build.

I have already got the case, cpu cooler, memory, monitors, keyboard and mouse.

I'll be ordering and couple Vapor-X 7970 Ghz's tomorrow after work from a local shop. (OTV) as I haven't been able to find any in stock on the web. I do want to overclock like crazy but I don't want to deal with water cooling. Also, I just want a sleek, black theme (no lights)

The only real questions I still have are about case fans...

1) For the case fan setup I would like to use Yate Loon SM's ( 4x120mm Medium speed for front and side and 1x140mm Medium speed for the back) but I don't want to use sleeve bearing fans for the top and bottom horizontal fans. For the top ball bearing 200mm I'll get a Big Boy, but what about the two bottom 120mm fans(not sleeve bearing please)?

2) I need a fan controller to control 8 fans...selecting a fan controller seems so confusing... and they all seem low quality! I am completely out of my element concerning fan controllers. I have tried researching them to no avail. Can I get a $50-$100 fan controller that kicks ass? (I would prefer analog dials and minimal lights and I'd rather not be soldering) Is there a high quality, non-flashy fan-controller out there? confused.gif

3) How do I get the fans set up so that the intake and exhaust is equal? Is this indeed the goal? If I get the cfm of the intake and compare it to the exhaust is that good enough?

Thanks guys, and if you have ANY other suggestions for my upcoming build, I'm all ears!

Edit: I'm mostly concerned about low noise for the fans.

Ah I forgot to mention, I plan on using my dumpy 3 year old WD 750GB external 2.0 for storage until SSD prices drop some more, then I'll get a second SSD.

Only gonna talk about fans if that's ok, mainly cos I'm very jealous of your build.

Case fans... quiet... reliable... Gentle Typhoon AP-14s... although 6 would be a massive overkill in this system I think. Maybe AP-13s in that case but look up reviews on the AP-14s and listen on youtube... they are near silent. I've only got AP-15 and 14s, so don't know how much quieter 13s are, but I wouldn't get 13s for any of mine as I find 14s are quiet enough.

You won't need a fan controller for them either, why would you turn down silent fans?

As for intake and exhaust... plan the airflow in your case and try and keep it somewhat balanced but don't worry about matching CFM, especially if mixing different makes of fans... most makers tell small porkies about the performance of their fans... or they are specs for "ideal situations".

Looking forward to how it all pans out!

Cheers,

DB

If you're concerned about fan noise, i would suggest the Gentle Typhoons as Del Boy has also suggested. Now if you really want a fan controller, I suggest Lamptron series.

In an ideal scenario yes you would want intake = outtake but that will be relatively hard to do since cases are not perfectly sealed so you will have air leaking through the open cracks or any small nooks.

For fans, your yateloons you picked are very good fans, GTs are great fans, and very quiet, but normally expensive.

For a fan controller you will want to look into Lamptron. They make very good high quality fan controllers, I would try to get some with 30W+ channels.

This seems like the one you might want, since it is non-flashy thumb.gif

I would recommend the NZXT Sentry Mesh fan controller. 30 watts per channel. It's simple, not flashy (only 1 LED), and it just works well. I am running 8 120mm fans using Y splitters. 2 front intake-Channel 1, 2 side intake-Channel 2, 2 top-Channel 3, Single bottom intake-Channel 4, Single rear exhaust-Channel 5. You could easily do something similar with your case fan setup.
The 1 thing you might not like is that you can't turn any fans completely off. The lowest they go is 30%. It's fine for me, but depends on what you're needs are.

Whoa! Thanks guys! Awesome!!

Ok so I kinda wanna stick with the 5 Yate Loons cuz I'm a couple grand over my planned budget from April but I will for sure get 2 GTs for the bottom fans.

I really like the idea of having a hardware fan controller so that I can fine tune each fan by turning a and IronMan that Lamptron FC8 looks perfect!

Hey apologies mat, I did not see your post as I was slowly replying on my stupid-phone.
I will also consider that controller, though I would like to be able to kill my fans while doing light stuff like surfing the web.

Del Boy I think I'd better reign it in a bit and not go too crazy on the sweet fans. I'm thinking I'll go 2x120mm Gentle Typoons for the bottom though, and if I am using that fan controller, should I go with higher speed GTs and turn them down when I don't need that much? Which would be the best bang for my buck as far as 120mm GTs with a fan controller go?
