Call me crazy.. I just don't understand why anyone would buy a 690?.. Don't 680's in sli run better than a 690? And you can get them through amazon warehouse for ~$400 a piece.

(when I say better.. I mean better oc potential, runs cooler, and cheaper)

You're neglecting that 680 SLI will require two PCI slots, slightly more power, and more cooling. Furthermore, if you have a mobo with 2 PCI slots, you're capped at 680 SLI, whereas a 690 gives you the option for quad-GPU on a fairly-standard motherboard. You'd need one hell of a PSU, but note an uber-expensive quad-PCI mobo. Granted, I feel these use cases are few and far between, but I bet there is more than one video editor or animator out there who has the budget for $2000 in rendering hardware.

Ok, so it'd be more for video/animating. That makes more sense.

It's odd to buy a 690 for rendering it has limited ram when you can get double that, and isn't sli in games only? Unless I'm mistaken, that is does 2nd gpu work in a prog like solidworks?

Nearly all GPGPU applications should work with multiple cards.

That depends on the program, that is whether it uses cuda or not. Solidworks for instance doesn't use cuda.

I understand that, I'm just saying that anything that uses CUDA would benefit from dual 690s. There are plenty of applications that support it in the scientific community, which primarily involves parallel-computing problems.

Fundamentally, it doesn't really matter because clearly nVidia has found a very strong business case for them in order to sink in their time to develop this. I don't think saying that "it's too much for gaming" or "it won't make my 3D CAD environment any faster" hits the nail on the head that it's not for those applications.

I bought a GTX 690 because it's truly a marvelous product. The engineering that went into designing such an amazing card was worth the money. Yes I could have bought two 680s and had a slight better performance for $100-150 cheaper but I wanted to own a work of art.
