Why is this satalite Internet so fast? On cruise ship

On a cruise for a week and purchased the Internet package, it's prepaid timed no matter the MB usage, it runs via satalite and has a warning that it is much slower than land Internet... I have MxTube on my iPhone and I download videos all the time,

The weird thing is all the videos download at 4GB/s.. No matter what video I download, instead of the few minutes it normally takes it just downloads instantly at 4GB/s! is that normal for satalite Internet???

This is only my guess but I'm thinking the internet is shared. More people on it the slower it is. Claiming the internet is slow and charging people by the amount of time used is a great way to keep out potential customers.

True, 4GB shared by 1500+ guest would be a huge bottle neck, I think it may have spiked for some reason, it's seems to be running at about 200kbs right now lol.

Lol 4GB/s? That's pretty insane. My only guess is that there weren't many people using it.

Yeah i also guess they must have taped in to some kind of military grade satalite for a while or something, it went back to normal in about 5 minutes, they must have been bumped off after they figured out that it was a cruise ship connected and not a battle cruiser haha

There's no technical reason why Satellite can't be high bandwidth. It's just high latency that's the issue.

Consider this: Hundreds of digital TV channels are sent up to satellites and down to customers all the time. That takes lots of bandwidth.

Yes, that's exactly what happened.

I'd like to see the phone or laptop that can handle 4GB/s. Even 4gb/s to a device is unreasonable. 802.11n, the fastest standard you'd see on a phone is only ~0.3gb/s.

What are your speedtest results? It's probably a miscalculation by whatever program you are using.
