PS3 Noob, and a Re-Flow....

So I got a PS3 for free that had a YLOD and I fixed it using a guide on YouTube. As far as I know, it's the launch version with 4 USB ports, memory card reader, and backwards compatibility. It has never had a software update in it's lifetime. This is my question, should I do one or not? Any other suggestions for me at this point? I haven't had a console since PS2, and the only reason I have one now, is that it was collecting dust at the original owner's house. Do I have a keeper here or what? Thanks in advance. biggrin.gif

Reflow is easy. I have done it. Just make sure you get the pcb and chips nice and hot with a heat gun. Most important thing is dont touch it after you heat it. You can knock the die's right off their solder points. Let it cool then re assemble.

No I already have it fixed. Just needed to know whether I should update the firmware or not. I had read somewhere about Sony nerfing some stuff in updates, and wondered if I was better off not doing it. Thanks anyway though. thumb.gif

If you can get it working you can manage to play a bunch of PS3 games off the hard drive, if you can update it to certain updates. PS3 is a great console BTW

Well it didn't come with a controller, and I always loved God of War for PS2, so I am buying the Saga bundled with the red controller. The welcome screen looks really good running off of my monitor. Can't wait to see what God of War looks like.

Pic of the teardown ^^^

Can anyone recommend a 500Gb hdd to go in it? I know it has to be a laptop drive, but not sure on the speed, or if it even matters. Is there a certain one that is popular for upgrading the PS3?
