PS3 Noob, and a Re-Flow.... - Page 2

I have fixed several PS3 and the YT guides make me cringe. the first thing to do is not get it nice and hot but, get a griddle an establish a nice hot pre heat so the board doesn't warp and ruin more BGA connections! I use the griddle just like i would put a graphics card on a baking sheet, by using aluminum foil balls.

The solder is gonna be high temp but, if your using a heat gun you have to be careful because they are way powerful and will fry stuff with shear heat alone. You are also gonna need home made diffusers ( giant tips/end) that are square and are the just tiny bit bigger than the chips (gpu/cpu). [I'll try to post pictures when i can]

You are also wanna make cooling modifications so it doesn't YLOD again, trust me just AS5 alone doesn't work I have had customers come back.

As far as the hard drive, the faster the better. I once saw a news article where they install an SSD and it made a noticeable performance increase

You will want 9.5mm thick hard drives. Some laptop hard drives are 12.5mm thick and will not fit.

I would suggest Western Digital Blue or Black in whatever size you need. Black is faster, but the blue is just a little bit slower and will run a lot cooler, which may be better for the fat PS3. Not sure if an SSD would be worth the price since the speed wouldn't be fully utilized.

PS3 games that use the HDD very often, such as GT5, benefited greatly from reduced load times when using an SSD, but, that's all you'll get really.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I was just curious as to how you all sit yours. Do you lay it flat or stand it on end? I am guessing that standing on its end would be better for heat disapation. Thoughts?

The PS3 gets rid of heat 90% through the back. It's only when it gets really hot does it start blowing heat out the side (or top if you sit it upwards on end), so, really, it doesn't matter. Personally i like to sit it down flat for general airflow balance and stability (and stability of internal moving parts), plus it looks nicer smile.gif

I have mine standing up, the only time heat has been an issue for me was when I had it in an entertainment center.

usually lay it on the bottom with taller rubber feet stuck to it, also this helps...

Enough suction to hold the paper there so this proves the intake works.

I also bend the back plate brackets too but, I am very careful about it and only bend a it tad or 2 more not a lot. "tad" being my own made up measurement of degree.

LOL. I just did this tonight. I'd say the intake for the fan is a piss poor design from sony, pretty much starving the fan of fresh air to blow through the heat sinks. I cut a 7 inch by 7 inch square with my Dremel right underneath the fan. We'll see how it works out.
