The biggest problem with these Raspberry PI's is the CPU. While I understand ARM 11's don't cost much I would also have liked them to upgrade to a single core A8 or A9 running at 1GHz. I can't see that adding that much to the cost or am I mistaken?

Friend of Mine just got his Pi

Unfortunately he will probobly be upset nbow that the 512mb is out lol

Also I sent him the link about that Daisy Chained Pi Super computer with Lego Brick Case lol

I think He plans on buying a ubnch of these now.,

Honestly I still dont see the point to this thing. I would rather get one of those Android on a Stick with the dual core pro'cs and SD Card reader. Sounds much more entertaining

I think it would add a significant amount to the cost. I have no idea if these are the actual chips they use, but I tried to grab some average prices for ARM processors. The A9's were even higher and could easily double the cost of the whole thing.

A8 = $20
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MCIMX535DVV1C/MCIMX535DVV1C-ND/2805032

ARM11 = $10
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MCIMX353DVM5B/MCIMX353DVM5B-ND/2063061

Given the ARM11 is a little older, maybe they found a supplier willing to offload extras for even cheaper, maybe the ARM11 is cheaper to actually build the board for (easier soldering, low speed for more room for error, more internal components, etc). I can't tell you what they actually pay of of course, but when you are selling something like this for only $35, you really have to cut corners. I'm sure they could have improved on dozens of things, but then it very quickly loses site of being an INCREDIBLY lost cost computer.

Doesn't matter much to me if it's still impossible to get. We're trying to procure one for an engineering capstone project and the distributors told us to wait in line behind 1500 orders of huge numbers of units.

So much for their educational goal!

It would cost more since they got special pricing from Broadcom already. They are now allowing over-volting so 1GHz is easily attainable.

Remember, the purpose of Pi is an affordable computer. Once people start pushing for upgrades like the CPU, it begins to negate the purpose of the project.

If you are talking about high-performance software, it doesn't work like that.... software that might run fine on these may not run optimally else where. You generally want to test code on equivelent platforms.... not ones that are 1-2 magnitudes slower.
