Need help OC'ing Northwood 2.8 - Page 2

you are definately going to need better cooling, you are running at the high end limit now. There are lots of aftermarket coolers to choose from that will bring your temps in line. I am running a 2.8c @3.36 w/1.65 vcore, my load temps are around 33-34c but thats water. Look into getting a Big Typhoon, they aren't expensive and will cool much better than a stock HSF.

Still - yours are high and I also wonder what your case temps are like. Do you have good airflow? What is you case temp under idle and load?

When was the AS-5 compound applied?
Most likely its a combination of bad thermal coupling or heat removal from the HS.
airflow in my case sucks as far as i can tell

i applied the Arctic silver when i replaced my MoBo
maybe a year ago now

do you think the temps were high enough to actually hurt my processor?

As long as temps are less than 55*C or so you will not do any harm to the processor. At a push for short periods of time you can exceed this temp but I would not recommend it if I were you

Good idea

Pick yourself up some decent cooling and give that Northy a good run for its money.

The IC7 board will make that thing fly once you have sorted out your cooling issues.

Also worth noting (Which I forgot to mention) is that the IC7 series motherboards onboard temperature diodes are quite inaccurate.

I found the "true" temp of the core to vary by upto 10*C below the recorded temps from the diode. This has been backed up by reviews (which I dont have to hand but google it if interested)

The later (newer) BIOS give slightly better results but apart from that you need to substitute the difference manually.

Personally what I did was to use motherboard monitor 5: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311

This software allows for a temp compensation adjustment for your motherboard.
This does not however adjust the BIOS readings.

I agree with MjrTom that the Temp readings can be a bit over the top with the IC-7 Mobos,
I havent had experience of the TTBig Typhoon, I imagine the fitting procedure isnt too difficult (Alot of members have them!)
An alternative would be the SI-120 a little difficult to fit first time, but once you know how it goes on its easy really!

a small increase in ya Vcore will help stop those BSOD`s (Dont hit 1.7V tho, Very Dangerous!!!!)
keep ya ratios locked for AGP/PCI buses at 66/33

Memory at 1:1

Ive got mine (2.53 Northy) to run stable at 3.4Ghz
I hope to get BroadBand sorted at home soon so I can get CPUZ verified!

Good luck mate, theres plenty of help on Overclock.net!!!!!

EDIT: Welcome to the Forum btw! Enjoy your stay!!
