SATA power end connectors - Page 2

Thread Starter
OK, found the link to the connectors. They are the end caps, and they are supposed to be the punchdown type. However like I said I can't get it to work. But note that punchdown connectors in general give me a hard time, I don't know why but they all are a pita for me. I'm thinking seriously of just using the pin type and redoing them, at least I know how to crimp pins. Well I say I do, I've never crimped SATA pins before. In fact looking at those links above, I'm not sure how they crimp.
Here is the end connectors I bought:

So does anyone have links to Mouser or Newark for the crimp pins and the housings? Seems it would be a lot cheaper if the housings could be obtained from the electrical supply houses instead of the pc vendors.
I'm tired of fighting with the pushdown connectors, and the 5 drive setup I have on the side of my SM8 is all spread out flat instead of being all lined up in a stack, which is also giving me fits.I think I have a workable connection but it's not fully sleeved nor pleasant to look at.

Are these the ones you mean 67582-0000 .

If so I had the same difficulty as you with the punch down connectors and tried them, they look horrible. They're not too bad for a single item (as long as you can't really see it) but more than one and you get an ugly mass of cabling that's difficult to hide. I linked to the pins at Mouser (UK) in an earlier post.

Is that an end cap or pass through BE? Actually I will need an end connector and several pass through, or whatever they are called. I need to string 5 drives spread out.
And yeah, all the crimp pin type. Horrible experience with the push down ones.

If you have 4 hard drives, for instance, that you want to wire all with 1 cable, use these that I listed above:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1792/ele-135/FrozenCPU_ConnectRight_DIY_SATA_EZ_Crimp_Connector_-_Black_-_90_M-SCA-16F-BK.html?tl=g44c155s649

Purcahse the wire, probably 18AWG (but check the specs of your PSU), and punch down the wire to the first one to start, all 5 wires (after you measure how far you need to go back to your PSU). Line it up with your next drive, mark off where you need to punch down the next connector, remove it from the hard drive (do not punch this down while the connector is connected to your hard drive) and punch it down. Keep doing this until you are finished. The cap on the left in this image is what you will want to use for the top one (it covers the ends of the wire) and the one on the right is what you will want to use for the rest.

To punch down, a fellow member instructed me to use the PCI blanking plate from your case. It seems to do a good job. Yes, its sort of a pain in the butt, but its way better than daisy chaining the connectors you are suggesting. Also, double, triple, and quadruple check that you have the connectors on the right way and not backwards. I would test each power plug on a cheap CD rom drive if possible to ensure they work before plugging them into an expensive 2TB drive.

Let me know if you have questions.

The ones that I linked to are designed to be used singly i.e. for 5 drives you'd need 5 separate wire sets (25 wires). Although you could probably daisy chain them by crimping 2 wires to each pin there's no way you could get them in the connectors if they're sleeved.

Edit: Nils has a very good picture of the ones I'm talking about just so there's no confusion.

I already made a harness from punch down connectors, but I don't like it.

Hmmm. So the only way to daisy chain is crimping double wires? I guess I'll stick with what I got, then. I just have a hell of a time with the punch downs, no matter what tool I use. I go to punch down the wire and whole thing falls over. Actually I ended up with the connectors inside the drives and gently tapping the wires into the connectors on a few of the drives. I'm hoping I didn't screw something up with the drives!
I've already planned to redo it after I get everything else finished, maybe I have enough practice now to get it done easier.
What makes it rough is basically all the drives are laid out flat on the backside of the motherboard area. There's two HDD's and a double SSD mount, and then I mounted another single SSD (not shown) using an old Corsair SSD bay mount on the seam next to the motherboard tray.

The harness I made (not shown)I just sleeved the portion from the cpu to the first connector, since I kept destroying wires I didn't want to waste time sleeving everything. Later like I say I'll redo the whole thing.

I wonder if something like this would work:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103229

You could run the power to it, then branch off to both hard drives. I've never done it, only seen it done, so you would want to look into it more than I could help.

mandrix - I didn't realise you had your drives laid out like that so maybe using the single connectors, on the 3 on the back of the mobo tray at least, might look fine.

You could consider splicing the wires rather than crimping double ones. I'm not sure it's going to be easy to get them to look good.

Yes, I think when I redo them I will just splice them. Now I'm searching for part number for minifit ATX pins. Bought some from PPC's but they are those short winged ones. I know they are posted so I'll keep looking.
