Graphics Driver Crash

Thread Starter
Having some serious problems sorting out a graphics card/driver issue. The PC is a custom built box that I built for a client (spec: http://i.imgur.com/YVqUk.png)

Computer was fine when it was first setup, worked well for a few months. Then it developed some issues after the client updated their drivers. Eventually we RMA'd the GPU and powercolor accepted that there was an issue with the card and replaced it.

It seemed to be fine for a while after that, but then it developed new problems.
When trying to play certain games (mass effect 1 is one of them), the graphics driver crashes within 1-30 minutes. The screen goes black, but sound continues on normally (doesn't loop) so it appears that the graphics driver crashes but can't recover, and the machine needs to be restarted.

Part of this problem is that I've been out of town for quite a while, and at the moment I can only go back on weekends (and it's a 2hour train away). I suspected that this was a driver issue, and helped to assist them with doing a fresh install of win7.

I'm at my wits end here, and I don't know how to fix this. Perhaps the card needs to be RMA'd again but I don't think that this is just a faulty card as it doesn't happen in all applications.

I think that I might need to go home for the weekend and take the machine away to run tests to get more information, but it's time/money and kills a weekend for me.

If anyone has any suggestions then please do reply.

TL;DR: Inconsistent graphics card issues - driver crashes under some games, not sure if hardware/software issue

Is the card overclocked? Does it happen in furmark? Can you replicate the issue using benching tools?

Check the temps as well, that could be another issue.

Thankyou for responding so promptly compuman.

The card isn't overclocked, it's been a while since i tested it with furmark but the last time I did it handled furmark perfectly. Wasn't able to replicate the issue with benching tools, but again it's been a while.

I think that I'll need to go and take the computer away for testing. It's just a pain the arse as it'll cost me money in train fares and will waste an entire weekend.

Part of my issue with this current problem was that the graphics driver crashes, but nothing is recorded in eventvwr. Is there some way to view information about driver crashes that don't show up in eventvwr by default? Some information about which driver crashed, or some error code would at least make me feel as if I know in which general area the problem lies.

Would have been handy if you lived close. Or if I had any friends from home who were technical enough to troubleshoot strange graphics driver issues. Looks like i have to go home then.

It's especially annoying as I was back home 2 days ago - and i made a trip round there to see if I could fix it before i got my train back. I thought i'd solved it too as mass effect ran for >30 minutes while I was still there without crashing. I unplugged their lexmark printer and closed the software on a hunch, and the game ran for >30 minutes when it would crash within 1-2 minutes usually. I left the place thinking all was well, but recieved an email later saying that it had crashed anyway and it was back to it's crashy self.

Most things you could do Via a remote desk top that you can do in person, with the exception of hardware removal.
I suggest giving Team Viewer remote connection a try frist before making the treak.

above or go and see your family....

I'd personally go up there ,oxford is a nice area, hell I'd give you a lift if I had a car, go there for a nice weekend away.

I was considering getting logmein setup, but the problem is that when the driver crashes I'd need to manually restart the box. And yes, Oxford is indeed quite pleasant. But I'd much rather spend a weekend geeking out with the mates I live with and not spending any more time/money on trains.

Thanks for the advice
