display driver stopped responding and recovered. HD5770

Thread Starter
hey guys so my cousins computer keeps getting this error "display driver stopped responding and recovered", iver tried alot of stuff to fix it with 0 luck. its a dell xps, i7 920 8 gigs of ram, 1tb drive, win7x64 Home Prem. Radeon HD 5770.

so the weird part about this is that it only happens in one game, a java browser based game called runescape.

it runs fine in need for speed world, grand theft auto 4, minecraft, and everything else he plays.

we tried cleaning the card, i removed a lot of dust from it.
re-installed drivers
re-installed java
re-installed browser, tried different browsers.
tried using overdrive and without.
deleting cache files from runescape.

i tried playing it in ubuntu, but i couldnt get openGL to run for some reason, so i wasnt able to test it in ubuntu accurately.

after a lot of fiddling and trying without success, i re-installed the OS from a retail disc, downloaded drivers from AMD, downloaded newest java, and it seemed ok but then it started again after a day.

things i havent tried yet:
flashing gpu bios
putting card in another computer
writing threatening emails to amd/dell.(warranty is expired)
updating mobo bios.

i read something about being able to this being related to windows TDR(timeout delay recovery?) and that you can disable it, but i cant figure out how, something about adding a registry key.

so yeah, please help me out here smile.gif

Dying card

Bake it if you dare, should bring it back to life. I have baked quite a few cards in my day with overall good results.

i'm thinking its not the physical level on the card because everything else runs fine. baking the card is a last resort before buying a new one IMO. but good thought. i forgot you could bake the card, ill try it before buying a new one if nothing else works.

Well I did just bake my buddys 4870x2 that was having the same problem and it fixed everything. Even firefox was causing crashes on his end. The game you say work fine arent vary gpu heavy games and is most likely the reason for them not to be crashing. If a fresh install of windows with lastest drivers still has the problem then its probably a hardware problem.

My first GTX470 came broken, could play MW2 or TF2 for hours but any dx10 game like BFBC2 or crysis would make it crash to white screen instantly then driver has recovered at desktop. Though my problem was with a bad GPU core and not the contacts under the chip.
