But that's not what the thread is about now is it? We're here to discuss how we feel about the budget cuts to NASA, and how we FEEL about them, can be discussed without bringing personal politics into it. Just because the OP is pro-NASA and encouraging others to write to their representatives, does not immediately mean politics are brought into it, especially when it regards our personal political views. You don't care that they're cutting the budget? Don't post in the thread, you make the choice to post and bring personal politics into it.

EDIT: Aside from that. It's pre-emptive damage control on the part of OCN. I have yet to see a thread that involved politics NOT devolve into a massive flame war. so rather than dealing with having to go through all the useless flame posts and clean it up, you close the thread, simple.

Nasa? Its useless as it stand.too unionised.
Look at all of your arguing with each other about which departments to cut and no one mentions interest payments on debt.

There is no need to pay back the debt.
Nationalize (or abolish) all private central banks.
There is no need to borrow money (at interest) from a private central bank.
Government is 100% capable of printing it's own interest-free money
After the private central banks are nationalized, there will be no need to pay back the debt, since the central bank will be a government department.

By the way, if we did actually pay back the debt, it would cause massive deflation and high unemployment.
Most countries are very heavily in debt. Paying back all the debt is not a realistic option. just forget about it.

When it gets out of hand, and people start flaming constantly, I think it makes sense to lock the thread. But the irony of your post is that being pro-NASA, or not pro NASA is a political statement in and of itself. Of course, keep the politics relevant to NASA, and not get off topic, but the definition of politics is " a term is generally applied to the art or science of running governmental or state affairs". I would definitely classify NASA budget as a government or state affair, and the fact that we are discussing how the budget should be applied is definitely considered "running" government or state affairs.

The thing is though, most people can't keep their politics relevant to the topic at hand and it spirals out of control VERY fast. Again, just look at the RFID thread. Full of off-topic political crap. The problem lies in people being unable to keep their 'party' out of the discussion. Regardless of political affiliation, NASA and what it does is needed. As I said before, this planet cannot sustain us forever.

Someone posted that what NASA does has no relevance to our problems. Guess what? We can't solve world hunger, global warming, and other issues like that without what NASA does. Too many people assume that all NASA does is shoot stuff into space and to other planets. They do far more than that. And the economic recession won't be solved by cutting the budget and possibly causing more lay offs. What WILL help the economy, is to get our fingers out of everyone else's pie as it were. We spend so much money trying to run other countries without stepping back and looking at our own country first. Kids are starving in Africa, yes, but what about the ones starving here? Just take a look at how bad Detroit is right now.

And that's WITHOUT bringing political sides into it, those are just my feelings on the issue at hand. Nothing political about it.

TL;DR
Cutting NASA budget isn't going to fix anything

Yes we can, it's called cutting OTHER areas, namely the military budget. We need to stop trying to police the world and work on fixing our own country. And I served in the military, so this isn't just wild hearsay. Question for you doc, I know you use a translator to post, and that's fine, but do you live/work here in the states? If not, I don't honestly see what relevance you're bringing. I'm not trying to sound like a dick, believe me, I just always see TONS of "America should do this to fix themselves, or they should cut this or that" from non-americans who've never lived here, let alone visited.

Anyway, I feel I should have specified what I meant by politics. personal politics I feel is fine in a discussion. Party politics is not, and that's unfortunately what most threads devolve into.

Now. Again, we can't solve MOST of the environmental and food issues we have without NASA, so explain to me how cutting NASA is going to help exactly? A lot of the technology we use in climate study and crop manufacturing have come from research and studies done by NASA. So you tell me where we're going to get that when the budget gets cut. Oh and as for what NASA finds on Mars... Hmm, might be good to know how and why the that planet died and can no longer sustain life, as it seems to be starting to happen here.

So it's okay to make the army build more tanks when they say they need no more tanks, yet the space programs get cut. hmmm...

Fix our own planet before going outwith it.

I guess the best way to respond to this is that platinum has numerous applications in the high tech industry, particularly high temp sensors. Platinum melts at a much higher temperature than other electrical conductors. Gold is used for many many things beyond jewelry, some more interesting uses like shielding arise out of its density. Helium is an incredibly important part of our understanding of the universe and is used world wide in many many industries. One well known tech is "neon" lights and signs, one less well known use is leak detection. Please do not denounce anything as useless; our knowledge deserves more consideration than you give it.

At this pace if ANYTHING happens to this planet we are officially SCREWED.
But beforehand.....humanity needs to SMARTEN UP and stop killing each other and isolating each other. Until that happens we are screwed regardless.

Maybe we as a race do not deserve to outlive the planet earth if we destroy it?

The history of man has been "the age of war" and that will never change, I fear sadsmiley.gif.

You might be getting the $2 billion number from the Mars Curiosity mission, I believe it was around $2 billion.

since my post was removed even though it discussed mostly the economic factors

NASA R and D developed how many techs?

2 techs keeping us from crashing into the ground that Military R and D created? Internet (Darpanet) and CELL phones (first backpack radios of ww2 were cell phones)

Please list the technologies MORE valuable than these 2 to the world economy that NASA R and D created.

You might not like it but wars breed more innovation than the drive to get into space. Sorry, but its true. I like space stuff too but I understand fundamentally it does not drive publics to support massive amounts of spending. Saving your butt from the other guy does. Its a simple fact of life.

This is why privatizing space is a good idea. Because they will get up there a lot faster because profit motivates them not public policy.
