Another thing that has not been recognized properly is why NASA got major funding in the first place? Anyone know? It was a conflict. A war that no shots were fired in. You know that War that lasted almost 45 years? Every commander of missions to space military officers. If you guys want NASA to continue to exist I suggest you start lobbying for it to be absorbed by the military. It will get some REAL funding then and we'll see space exploration take off.

Actually I'm not, take a look at the list I posted and tell me again how any of those are NOT more important to this world's economy than cellphones and the internet. And while you're at it, go ahead and point out the 'factually incorrect' ones, as all the ones posted originated from NASA R&D. Some may have finished their development elsewhere, but they originated with NASA. I say again, our world functioned perfectly fine, and arguably had a more stable economy BEFORE those two technologies (not including the depression which was caused by a drought, not a lack of technology). Aside from that, we already have a military space program, it's called the Air Force, look into what they do. What they provide is for the military, where as NASA, REGARDLESS of where it came from, has given us FAR more worthwhile technologies that we use on a daily basis than cellphones or the internet.

I guess according to your logic, clean water is less important than cellphones and the internet eh?

I didn't. It is what I feel is the case, and the sitting president has stated. How is that any attack or part political speech? It was a small line on my post. No need to be offended.

It is sad, I love nasa, but the bottom line is this.

Nasa spent 6 billion dollars launching 4 rockets into space. Spacex does that same missions for 133 million dollars per launch. A grand savings of 1.37 billion dollars per launch.

Why? Because every dollar nasa spends is handed out to union, contractors that have no competition, and preselected contracts given by congress.

The only way to get the 1.5 billion dollars costs down to the 133 millon dollar cost is to completely gut nasa. Force it to cancel the contracts that are bleeding it dry and make the spending of any money handled by a committee not congress.

Until then, it will cost 10 times the amount of money.

I'm not offended, simply stating that the admin here on OCN don't want party politics brought into discussions, specifically naming the president is bringing that into the discussion. Regardless of what side you're on.

Military spending is no better, the contracts the DoD has are incredibly ludicrous, so you can't throw NASA under the bus for the exact same thing the DoD does for the military.

And spacex came decades later after all the research was done. It features course it's cheap comparatively.

@marafice I diddidn't see that post before. Sorry. That said though it is odd to ask someone to discuss mathematics without being allowed to mention basic operation symbols or formulas,. That is basically what saying "don't name the person the article is talking about or anything to do with him even if it is factual" is saying and I don't understand it.

I love this. When curiosity landed on mars people were flipping out that it costs 2 billion, Its like they thought we loaded it up with money and sent it hurtling through space. I think I saw a study that said for every $1 spent on NASA it creates $11 in the economy.

But this sucks, NASA needs a heck of a lot more funding!

1. I'm not from the US, nor do I live there (and I dont want to - because of stuff like this).

2. The US goes to war all the time because... why? 99% of the time, they act like "the world wants us to do something!" or "We protect the free world", but in reality, no one wants them to do anything. It's all about greed. Either corporate, government, or both.

Look at the history. Why did the US go into Korea? Because they wanted to be allies with the Koreans? No. It was to prevent "the spread of communism" - because communism is "evil" and "must be stopped". Same goes with Vietnam. It's almost never logical. They go in when they're confident they can win, and ONLY go on when its profitable. More proof? WW2. Germany was steam-rolling the rest of Europe, and the US' stance was "its not our problem". Really? Then magically, AFTER the USSR starts turning the tide, AND after they were attacked they finally go in. The US has never fought a symmetrical war.

The point? Maybe if they stopped with the lie of being "king of the world", they could fix their economy. The US has contributed tons of the world - a lot in space flight, computers, and so on. However, the only reason they ever do ANYTHING is because of war. Meanwhile the EU, which hasn't been directly at war with anyone built the LHC (and is planning to upgrade and build a bigger one), is building a better GPS system, and a telescope with a 40m mirror - ALL at the same time.

One has the priorities right, the other doesn't.

Heh I was born here, raised here, live here, and served in our military and still agree with everything you just said. Our 'foreign interests' are costing us more than we're getting. I really am tired of the whole 'we must police the world' sentiment, we have so many problems HERE that need to be fixed. It may sound harsh, but the rest of the world can fend for itself like it's done for centuries, WE need to get ourselves back on our feet first.
