[CNN] Here comes Microsoft's Xbox Music service

When Microsoft announced Xbox Music at this year's E3 gaming expo, it sounded like an effort to become the next iTunes.
But new details show that the service, which begins rolling out this week, aims to be a whole lot more.
Microsoft announced Sunday that the all-in-one service will feature streaming online radio (think Pandora), an ad-supported or paid subscription service (say, Spotify) and, yes, music purchasing (a la iTunes). It begins rolling out Tuesday on the Xbox 360 system and will expand to the rest of the Microsoft product universe when its new operating system, Windows 8, is released October 26.
It will eventually be available on devices running Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems.
"There are a lot of individual services that do a good job, but today there isn't a service which can pull together the benefits of download-to-own, music subscription, or free streaming services," Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of Microsoft's interactive entertainment division, said in a written release.
"With Xbox Music, what we wanted to do is bring all of that value in one simple, easy-to-use service, then build some additional value on top -- make it really beautiful, and have it work across all of your devices."

And after 30 days you have to pay $10 a month to use it or $120 a year. $100 with a straight 1yr purchase. No thanks, I'll stick to Pandora for $36 a year. This is just like their Zune Pass thing was, $10 a month (or was it more, I can't remember) and it let you 'keep' 10 songs each month. I'll still stick to Pandora honestly.

I've been a fan of Zune. It is a great interface and fast on my machine. It's got a lot of the music my friends who come by want to put on. Even obscure artists. However, the changes are a little annoying.

I'm undecided whether or not I will renew. I feel like switching services since I want music on my android phone too. I think it may be time to either remove all the DRM or redownload my collection and start over.

It was $15 a month for the subscription to keep songs (which they no longer offer) and $10 without. Thats for unlimited downloads and or streaming without ads. I dont know what they will charge for the pandora type service, but I doubt it will be $10 just for that unless they are only offering it bundeled with a includes everything subscription. It sounds like they will still have a free ad supported version of pandora style streaming.

That would make it more enticing because honestly, I don't need to download the music. I get higher quality, ad free music on Pandora for $36 a year, if MS has something similar and competitively priced, I may consider it, but I have Pandora on both of my computers and my phone. I barely use my xbox as it is. However one other thing would be a major plus for me. I still do play Forza 4 (and plan to get Horizon at some point) if you can listen to XB Music while gaming (I know you can do this with media stored on the 360, or on the network right now, but idk about XBMusic yet) then I would probably consider it.

This sounds like Zune pass all over again. Yet, people will still buy into it because it's on their Xbox.

I love zune pass. I've had it for close to a year now and it's been a great investment for me. (I grant that having a windows phone makes it more enticing.) I do wish I still had the option of downloading 10 DRM-free songs per month, because it kind of sucks having all this music that instantly vanishes the moment I stop paying.

Unfortunately, for owning music, I still haven't found a replacement for actual CDs, since it's the same price as digital music but you get lossless quality (and I consider the physical CD a plus, too, for posterity). However, $10+ per CD is quite expensive. I wish there were a better way...
