Wanted: Boxee "like" or equivilant OS for vm/media server

Hi,

Looking to build a boxee server, regardless if in VM or on literal pc.

Any thoughts on how this can be done?

If by "server" you mean a media centre (Boxee isn't a server), then XBMCbuntu or OpenELEC - both of which run XBMC which Boxee is based upon.

I wouldn't run them in a VM though. At least not if you want real time video playback tongue.gif

That's the odd thing, i'm thinking I have enough spec to do realtime video playback. As i'll literally assign half my cpu & half the ram to the vm, and see how it performs. I'm just trying to see what I can do with what I have. Would you know of an iso I can use? (Legitimately asking, if it's opensource/free somewhere).

You can use most Distros. The XBMC Distro just comes preinstalled with the media center software.

Distro Download (click XBMCbuntu)

Installing on a different Distro

CPU / RAM isn't the issue. The problem is graphics rendering. Even with full hardware acceleration enabled in the VM, you may find that the video render smoothly / in time with the audio. This will be particularly acute with HD content.

If you have a tight budget, then look into getting a Raspberry Pi (they're $25, IIRC) and run OpenELEC on one of them.

All of the above is open source and if you google the suggestions I gave you'll be presented with ISO downloads and install instructions. Personally, I'd recommend starting with OpenELEC as it has a much lower footprint than XBMCbuntu.
