FCC To Allow Cable Companies To Encrypt Over-the-Air Channels

Thread Starter
Found this on slashdot but it is still an utter pile of crap for HTPC builders -

"The FCC is now allowing cable companies to encrypt free OTA channels that they also rebroadcast over their networks. 'The days of plugging a TV into the wall and getting cable are coming to an end. After a lengthy review process, the FCC has granted cable operators permission to encrypt their most basic cable programming.' Soon the only way to receive free OTA channels via your cable company will involve renting yet another box or buying something like Boxee"

My house got rid of TV service years ago. It's like being freed from drug addiction or slavery once you realize you really don't need TV programming to live.

So apparently I will go from watching 1~2hrs of TV a week on my Boxee Box to a big fat zero.
I don't want another box in the house, especially a slow arsed cable box that requires a rental fee.

Also...
Boxee can't decrypt cable (last I checked)
Also... Also...
The biggest complaint I still have is that it is cheaper to get my internet through the cable company while having basic cable.

So let me get this?cable tv industry couldn't convince user to adopt pay per view ?so now cable industry is gona come clutter the internet with the same ......we still don't want but FCC is impossing on us ?because?why the need suddenly ?user still don't want it,worst This is what will happen, stuff that was never encrypted will be,and cable excuse after month of delay and your stuff very much encrypted, oups sorry.there is a reason it was always kept separate ,its to prevent issue.fcc again sleeping on the job

Those of you with a good network and computers in every room should really consider a Ceton or HDHomerun prime, along with the rental of a cable card. Cheaper than the damn boxes (multiplied if you have cable in other rooms of the house) and so much more freedom. Granted that yes, you still have a cable bill but my personal feeling is now that I've done the HTPC thing in every room with a central one doing all the recording, I'm finally getting my money's worth out of my cable bill. I can't cut it because of the wife. This does not detract from the encrypting of the normal channels being total BS.

My understanding is that is the cable companies big push to kick off all the cable stealers and lock down content. A bit of reading says that they will have to offer all these "local" channels over IP (so apparently my Boxee will still work, maybish, and probably not in HD) but I can almost guarantee that this will count against your bandwidth cap.

Glad I got rid of cable years ago.
They make it harder instead of easier to watch TV. Wish I had more options for internet, I pay too much for it.

This is far too true. For all the money wasted on cable you could get a decent internet speed, subscribe to a hulu/netflix and get what you want (Most of the time) for a lot cheaper. I would really love to see a tv service online where I go to their website or w/e and make my own package. Just pick your stations and stream anything on them you like within like 24/48hrs of broadcast. I think I'd grab for the moment... HBO, and like 1 or 2 other stations, that's it. Well IF I was in the mood to pay for the very limited shows I would be interested in watching.

Also as posted earlier I must agree... "Disgusting" is the word of the day for this BS

My ISP called earlier asking if I would like to add some cable TV to my existing internet only service for no extra monthly fee and free installation. I said no thanks, I don't want extra equipment in the house.

Regular TV is dead as far as I'm concerned.
