I'm having a rough time overclocking :(

Thread Starter
I have been trying to overclock for a long time but can't oveclock with stability over 2600 mhz. I think it might be the generic ram?

Specs:
amd 64 3500+ 2200 mhz stock
m2n32 sli deluxe
2 gb "SpekTec" Ram (Generic) ddr2 533
Evga 7900 gt KO
Antec truepower 2.0 550w
Watercooled cpu.
Idle 16 degrees. Load 20 degrees

Is there anyway I can overclock more than 400 mhz? or am I expecting too much?
I've actually seen alot of A64's that topped out at around 2.6GHz. So that 400MHz is right about average.

Just keep playing with it though. We will need more info on what setting you're using like CPU muliplier and v-core and such to really help out or else we will probally tel you stuff you already have done. If you are thinking your ram is holding you back just be sure to set a low divider to leave it running at stock. CPU speed is more important than memory speed any way, but I never skimp on memory. having good memory always helps out in an overclock

Most of the time I have better luck with the 10X CPU multiplier...this 4200+ I got is simply a gem and flies at 270x11

hmm. sorry for the threadjack but i have had a hard time overclocking my sempron.
maybe its cuz sempron sucks. lols....
well i got the Sempron 2800+ (2.0 ghz)
166x12 1.6v
jammed onto a cheapie ECS KT-600A
Coupled with 512mb kingston pc 2700 ddr ram.
The Bus multiplier is locked so the most i could OC it was 174x12 1.6v
btw, the voltage is locked too. the Ram was autosynced with the cpu bus so it was running 174mhz too. the problem is that it crashes on hardcore 3D software
such as CS: Source.

the Gfx card im using is ATI Radeon 9700 AIW Pro. Oc'd also, stock clocks are
324/310 but im running it BARELY PUSHED at 344/324 so the vid card isnt the problem (also know this cuz before i oc'd my cpu, it ran at clocks 370/340)

is it just the sempron core that doesnt like to oc or is it the cheapie mobo its sitting on?
core temps are around 61 deg C. the whole time while its oc'd. case temps are 50 deg C.
help?

I just replaced my 3500+ cause I was getting the same results you received. 2.6 seemed to be my stability ceiling while I was able to get to 2.8 with all sorts of instability. My problem was definitely my memory, others have done better with quality ram. Quality ram is next on my wish list as it is still holding my new good stepping opty 170 down to 2.55 whereas I ought to be kissing 2.8 to 3. A little at a time....patience and good luck

You really ought to start your own thread...but in the meantime I'd vote your mobo off the island first.

Actually, for an AM2 that seem rather low, most seem to do 2700 or more from all the reads I've seen.
Have you tried the PCIe bus bump yet? Although the rule of thumb is lock it @ 100, setting it to 107-112 has improved OCing due to voltage harmonics. Watch the bump because over 112 can cause damage to the vid card.

am2 on water you should be seeing quite a bit higher speeds. i'd say at least 2.8 running a reasonable amount of voltage.
