[CNN] Apple schedules 'iPad Mini' event for October 23

Quote:
One of the worst-kept secrets in tech has been confirmed: Apple will hold an event October 23 in San Jose, California, at which the company is widely expected to unveil a smaller, cheaper version of its popular iPad.
Apple sent e-mails to members of the press Tuesday that read simply, "We've got a little more to show you. Please join us for an invitation-only event at the California Theatre in San Jose on October 23 at 10:00 a.m."
Unlike last month's invite to the unveiling of the iPhone 5, which contained a not-so-subtle "5" in its graphic, Tuesday's colorful rainbow design offered few hints about what Apple might announce, although the word "little" could be a clue.
Numerous news reports suggest the secretive company will introduce a 7- or 8-inch version of its popular tablet, which currently has a nearly 10-inch screen when measured diagonally.

This is sweet. According to a MacRumors article it's supposed to "Carry 'unprecedented' Battery Design", the same port layout as the 15 inch but no discrete graphics.

Shame, I was hoping for even a low level GPU for some gpu acceleration
I hope they dont airize it like the 15" MBPr

13" chassis is already a good balance between expandability and weight.

It is a super sexy display, but I wish there was an option with the display but without the premium of a ssd.

Many people would find the resolution beneficial, but would still like the larger drives of the more traditional Macbook Pro. The addition of an optical drive would also help out with a 13inch, possibly a model more similar to the current mbp w/ the display and current features, and a macbook air with the ssd and upgraded display.

assuming it has Thunderbolt port, you could put an external graphics.card.on it like a gtx 680

I'd rather stick that in my desktop then spend 200 extra on the dock.
TB tech is still too expensive and a external GPU sorta defeats the purpose of a workstation I can work anywhere including where there is no plugs.

Doesn't the Retina MBP already struggle with rendering some web pages while scrolling due to the ultra high resolution, despite having a GTX650M? How will this one be able to handle the resolution using only an IGP?

By many, you mean no one right? No one would use 1600p on 13" for work purposes. UI elements would be so small at 100% scaling that it would ruin the purpose of having a higher res. Even 1080p at 13.3" on my Zenbook Prime is small at 100% scaling... and if the current 15" Retina display is any indicator, the screen is on par with the Zenbook Prime 1080p screens and below the Sony Vaio Z 1080p screens in terms of color reproduction. So basically, the "many" people who would find the sharpness beneficial would be the people who claim they can see a difference in sharpness between 1080p and 1600p on a 13" screen... Btw, I've seen a Retina display in person and it's not noticeably sharper than say a Zenbook Prime or Vaio Z screen. and I have 20/20/15 eyesight ^_^

Even if some person can magically tell the difference, I'm pretty sure higher performance is more important than 1080p vs 1600p resolution on a tiny display. I mean, the price for the base model (based on past configurations, 128 GB SSD and 4 GB of RAM) will be AT LEAST $1600.

Because that's what people want with their ultraportable laptops, an extra dock to carry around rolleyes.gif If they were just going to use the dock at home, they would have a desktop. Heck if they were tech savvy enough to know about a thunderbolt GPU dock, they would have a desktop.

Lot of resolution for even an HD 4000 to handle... we'll see how it goes.
