Steve Jobs did say that however IIRC: 7.85 inches is about 60% of the iPad's 9.7 inch viewing area, unlike 7 inches which is only about 40%. And on top of that Steve Jobs was also known for doing complete 180's in a short period of time.

I can appreciate that everyone has their own opinion and this is mine:
iPad mini is unnecessary for the consumers (or maybe just me, I can't speak for everyone else). iPad for something big, iPhone/iPod touch for something small. An iPad mini is still to large for someone's pocket but too small to do any serious work on.
However Apple probably need this in order to compete with the Nexus. I don't see why people here are getting excited over it. Unless it applies to the niche who want something Nexus sized but with iOS.
