Multi-monitor help and sugestions

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I have some old randomly sized monitors at the moment (one of them is 17:10 for some reason) and i am looking to upgrade. I have had 2 monitors for a wile, and to be honest, i find they often are not quite enough as i often have an absurd amount of things open at one time. this has lead me to look into triple monitors.

the two options i am currently looking into is either 3x 1080p/1200p monitors or possibly a 1600p and 2x 1600x900 (or similar) monitors in portrait on either side. The problem comes in that i am a total newb when it comes to monitors. I would obviously like to keep the price down, but i am looking for quality monitors, and as i am not sure how much a true quality monitor will run, i do not have a price range yet.

recommendation either way (or pros and cons of each) would be great, and if you guys know of some suitable monitors actual recommendations would be even better.

Thanks in advance,
-esk smile.gif

EDIT: i do game as well, and will soon be updating my rig to suitable hardware with at least dual 7970s. I do not FPS game, and as such am not too bothered by little larger response times and 60hz monitors. it would also be nice to game on all monitors if possible (something i cant seem to find if it is possible on the 2x 1600x900 and 1600p monitor setup)

EDIT2: I am definitely willing to dish out the cash needed for a suitable setup, im just not looking for the extreme of the extreme and have no idea what a suitable set up would cost

well... there's no such thing as cheap quality monitors. you're gonna have to dish out the cash.
2. you are a real estate addict. think long term and think 4 monitors 24" monitors or 3 27" monitors. your best bet is the 27" korean monitors. with those you can start with one, then go 2-3-4.

so in my opinion eye the korean monitors. they are cheap and have the real estate...

of course you already know you need a totally new rig.

I am absolutely a real estate addict smile.gif. as for the price, i have no idea on quality pricing, so all i meant by keep the price down is i dont need 3ms faster response times for $100 more. I also will most likely not be going with more then 3 monitors in the near future as i am a college student and neither have the space nor the cash for more then that. when i do go passive display though, i plan to do it right go either 3, or 6 1600p monitors with the gear to match . but again, i dont see that happening for quite a wile.

I am mainly looking for a general price range for both setups and possibly some decent starting places. since i am just getting into monitors im not sure of either

i know an addict when i see one. i'm one too.

the koreans are the best bang for buck right now. 1 would be the right start. cause you'd still have your other smaller monitors to help it out.

Alright. And what monitors would u recommend to accompany it? (just a general idea is fine) The reason for the whole upgrade in the first place is because both of my current monitors are getting stolen by my parents and little brother (plus it makes a convinient excuse for an upgrade tongue.gif)

Also, I know that the major difference between different Korean monitors is just the housing and stand, but I was wondering if u had a link to a comparison of the major brands. I saw one on here a wild ago when they were dirt starting to get popular, but I haven't been able to find it since. My main consternation is that I would like a monitor I can mount to a separate stand in the future. Smaller bezels would also be nice, but not a must.

And thanks for the help this far... +rep smile.gif

Oh! And lastly, what would a decent 4x 1080p monitor set up run? (just a guesstimate is fine)... I friend of mine just asked about an hour ago and I had no idea and thought I was decently on topic with this thread tongue.gif

i'm not up on the korean monitors but they all seem to have thick bezels and most of them have a thick lower bezel (which would really suck for multi-monitor setup).

1080p monitors are kinda cheap and look like they'd run about $150 new so 150x4 about $600. i'm not a fan of 16:9 monitors but i see tigerdirect having them on sale for about that much. whatever monitors they are, they're probably not quality monitors.
i say i'm not a fan of 16:9 monitors but would recommend a 1440p monitor because 1440 is plenty. 1200p is barely enough. 1080 isnt... that is, from an addict pov.

The Achieva Shimian would run you ~ 320 a pop, and give you a better option if you were going to re-mount them right away. That would get you 2560x1440x3, which is more than enough space for the foreseeable future for much less than most alternative options (unless you went with 3 x 1080 which =/= the same real estate).

ty... i will let he know, and as for 16:9 monitors, i dont mind too much at the moment, but i would agree that often they are agitating... i would much prefer 16:10, but from what i have seen in the past few days, they carry a real price premium for not much more screen frown.gif

im am worried about physical space if i go with 3x 1440p monitors... in my current room it isnt much of an issue, but i will be moving into a much smaller dorm at the end of teh year and i am worried about not having enough space frown.gif... and the mounting system on the back of the achieva is exactly what i was talking about (just if i remember correctly, not all of them have it)... seeing as an aftermarket 3 monitor stand that will actualy hold these puppies up will run me near the cost of the monitors, i was wondering what you recommend doing if i don't end up with enough desk space

ty for the recommendation smile.gif... unfortunately, being a 3D molder (part time) and a general computer geek i am a bit of a snob on pixel density, and the 1080p 27" monitor i was given a wile ago (had to give it back about a month ago) was too blury (for lack of better terms) for my tastes.. the pixel density of a 23" 1080p/1200p monitor seems about right to me (maybe im just spoiled?)... from what i understand, 1440p and 1600p 27" and 30" panels are around teh same density, witch is prity nice

The last question for all fo you is prity simple... how hard will it be to get use to such huge monitors (that match) coming from 1x 23" (close to) 1080p, 1x 19" 900x900 and 1x 17" (whos resolution i dont know, but it is 16:9 or at least close to it)?

for someone who needs real estate, one 2560x1600 isnt enough. the resolution would appear big for a few days then you'd quickly get used to it. of course you'll never want to go back to a smaller monitor.
2x24" 1920x1200 provide more real estate than one 30" 1600p monitor. and many other advantages over a single monitor. esp for someone who doesn't game. 3x24" seal the deal and they'd still be less than the cost of one 30" 1600p monitor.
it's also easier to come up with $300 than come up with $800+...

the 19" and 17" 16:9 monitors imo are just too small to work on to get anything done. 'rather have them in 4:3 or 5:4.
