The pads probably did stretch when you took them off. Also, when the heatsink presses down on them, it might thin out the pad in the center, but cause it to thicken on the ends. Place the heatsink back on the card and eye it up visually. The thermal pads you need should be between 1 and 1.5mm thick. If you're really not sure on the thickness, get a thicker thermal pad that has a softer consistency. If it's too thick, cut it smaller and push down on it to spread it.
