Ballnut's Project: Information Overload- Featuring the Merlin SM8 - Page 2

Thanks Jim, Also, what are the reasons someone would go with a drop in mount over a standard mount on the top? Is that just in case you want to do things in the future? Are there any other reasons to get this?

Also, the SM8 has a 120mm ventilated top option for 60 bucks. How does this differ from the pedestal? Is it used similarly? If so, can you mount rads in it? How?

The drop-in mounts make it much easier to install or change out a radiator. Once you assemble a 480 inside a case, you'll see what a PITA it can be. The extended top and pedestal serve similar functions: the 120mm top allows a singe radiator to be mounted above the frame while a pedestal will allow two radiators to be added to the system.

So you can have a 480 at the top of the case, and then another 480 mounted at the top of the 120mm addon? I'm having trouble visualizing how the mounts work. If the 480 is a PITA, am I better off going with a 420 since I'm new @ all this? If you would rather do this over phone, let me know, I'll PM my #.

No you would just have one 480 on top of the case. The difference is whether the radiator is inside of the case (no 120mm top) or on top of the case with a 120mm top covering it.

See photos for this case:

The 120mm extended top will allow up to two 480's in your system (by putting the PSU in the upper position) while the pedestal will allow up two three 480's. Installing a large radiator a 480 (or even a 420) is a pain in that it helps to have three hands: one to hold the radiator, keeping the fans from moving with the other and have a third to tighten the screws tongue.gif After my first one, I knew there had to be a better way so drop-in mounts ca to be... The "old fashioned" way is certainly doable, but drop-ins make it nicer wink.gif

Jim,

I am having trouble visualizing. If I mounted the PSU in the upper position (not 100% sure how I would do that or where exactly it would be), Then I imagine I could have 2- 480's without having the 120mm extension. (one on top, one on bottom, psu in flexbay below res.

So I guess I'm having trouble visualizing what the 120mm extension is for, besides more room up top.

Also, on the flex bay, if you order everything ventilated, that means you don't have to buy the extra fan mount accessories, right? I am going to use case fans there, will I need an additional fan mounting flex bay mount if I already have the ventilated flex covers??

Slowly getting there. Jim, I think I'm going to go ahead and make a thead in the watercooling section for my build log, so I can have everything in one place. I will pm you the link. In other news, the Rampage 4 extreme arrived today and was damaged. Asus either missed one, or has severely bad quality control. I'm guessing it's the latter since this isn't the first time I've had trouble with them. Check it out....
