[Various] Microsoft Surface RT Pricing and availability - Page 16

post #151 of 186
I was personally going for the ARM based RT a few months back, but now that the price of it is out, i think im going to wait.

unfortunately some websites hyped that the rt was going to be around 300 which I thought was awesome.
Now that I know I don't even get the typecover with it for 499, i'll wait till surface pro
plus i want to be able to install my own goodies on the thing, and maybe play some steam games on it, thus more justification to wait for pro i5=woot

hopefully pro doesn't end up costing >1000 but who knows

i am surprised by that too. it goes to show that M$ is really not getting the word out about the different flavors of windows. it also shows that ocn members are not as up on everything as they like to think that they are.

Ok, let's do some FACT checking to prove you two are wrong (but more directed at gammite, as TheByt3 already told CJRhoades that he was not correct): this thread has 151 posts as of this writing.

People who you could doubt knew what they were talking about: 6.

Out of those 6, people that you could be 100% sure didn't know what they were talking about: 2

Here they are:

post #11: formula_m, it may appear he is mistaking this device for the one having a fully fledged OS, but it is also true that Windows RT is arguably a more fully featured OS and comes with more apps and Office, which is his point (though Office 2013 will be released in 3-5 months for iOS and Android too, but at a cost, of course);

post #65: ComradeNF asks a somewhat rhetorical question (possibly just wanting some 100% confirmation of his right idea), but has the right idea and goes on from there talking correctly;

post #88: snoogins mistakenly thinks the Surface RT can run x86 programs;

post #96: kiwiasian talks about "Windows 8 has a full desktop OS behind it", leading some to believe he thinks this tablet comes with Windows 8 and not Windows RT, but he could be referring to the fact that the kernel is the same (although coded to work on ARM, of course), even though he makes the mistake of calling the OS this comes with Windows 8 and not Windows RT, but that is probably just a simple mistake, as it is clear that Windows 8 is a full desktop OS, so his sentence does not literally make much sense as it is because it would be stating the obvious;

post #97: coachmark2 thinks this runs Windows 8;

post #98: windowszp aks the rhetorical question of whether this can run x86 programs, but he knows the answer.

ok, here is my 2 cents on this.

Ipad is a glorified iphone and it is terrible to do anything significant on. I am not an apple hater as I have a macbook, iphone, and ipad...just so you guys know right off the bat...

The surface takes a different approach and takes a full computer OS and slims it down a bit for more portable use. I see this as an opportunity for many developers and programmers to utilize the surface for a lot more productive features that will come closer to replacing netbooks and laptops in general.

However, I still cannot justify the price at the moment seeing as how I can get a Nexus 7 for $200 when all I personally use my ipad for is some occasional web browsing, reading, and movie time checking...

I do agree though that at this high of a price it better make one heck of a good first impression on the majority of shoppers. Would I turn one down? NO but I wouldnt turn anything down that was free.
post #154 of 186
They are competing directly against the IPad users, not the Nexus 7 owners...

$500 for a 32GB tablet with built in Micro SD, HDMI out and USB ports compared to a more expensive IPad 3 with 32GB (plus the cost of all those accessories to get USB access, card and video out etc).

In Canada, the 32GB with touch cover is $619. An IPad 3 32GB version is the exact same price.... Sure the IPad has a higher resolution screen (although MS maintains their screen has better picture quality despite lower resolution) but it is all of the extras for the same price that puts the Surface ahead.

Before anyone throws rocks at me for being a Microsoft flunkie, keep in mind I have 3 tablets (Samsung 7 inch, Toshiba 7.7 inch and an IPad 2 64 GB). They all serve their purpose but frankly I hate the Apple IOS on the IPad. The hardware is fine (although it struggles to play high res videos) with the exception of not having a Micro SD port but I would take virtually any iteration of Windows over a Mac OS. My wife and daughter like their Iphones, Ipods and Macbook Pros but I have always preferred Android devices - until now.

I pre-ordered my surface this morning (64GB version with touch cover). It will go nicely with the various 32 and 64 GB micro SD cards I have on hand. Let us hope battery life is as stated.

You'll do a review of the Surface will you? If so I look forward to it.

I'll point out though (as someone else did on another thread) that the Surface RT 32GB comes with 20GB space already used from the OS, Office and a few apps. So you do get 32GB of space, but much of it is used already.

Also the iPad 3 has a much higher pixel density and nearly full sRGB coverage. Even if the Surface matches the display colour accuracy it still can't compete in terms of pixel density which is the real difference between the 3 and the 2.

I read about the storage space. Not really a concern since my first act will be to permanently plug in a 64GB micro SD card wink.gif

And yes when I get it on the 30th of October, I will provide pics and review.

It would be interesting to know what the battery life is with an SD card permanently inserted versus not having any inserted. Also, what the read speed of the SD card reader is. It's important to know whether it can play HD videos straight from the card without stuttering, for example.

Thanks!

I'm curious about that as well. I can play 720P video from the Micro SD on my Toshiba 7.7 without any issues. Even my lowly Samsung 7" has no problem running video off the micro SD cards.
